Host Chile played in the preliminary round in Group 2 against Italy , Germany and Switzerland .
In the first group game, Chile defeated Switzerland 3-1 after a nervous start and deficit due to the later Nuremberg Bundesliga player Rolf Wüthrich .
On June 2, the match between Chile and Italy, which went down in World Cup annals as a scandal , followed in Santiago . Thanks to a disastrous referee performance, the almost brutal hosts came to an undeserved 2-0 win, with the Englishman Aston unilaterally disadvantaging the Italians, but turned a blind eye to the Chileans several times. Two Italians, Ferrini and David, were sent off the field. Nine of the guests had no chance.
It was not until the 2-0 win against Chile that the spectators saw a strong German team that actually only surpassed the equivalent opponent in terms of its strength in the end. Horst Szymaniak (23rd from a penalty) and again Uwe Seeler (82nd) scored for the Herberger team. Both teams qualified for the quarter-finals, while the 3-0 victory over the Swiss was of no use to the Italians.

Even if the world's best goalkeeper at the time, Lev Yashin from the USSR , showed a great performance, Chile were 2-1 winners in the quarter-finals in Arica. After just 27 minutes, the result of this game in front of 17,000 visitors was clear.
Semifinals
76,500 | Estadio Nacional ( Santiago de Chile ) | Brazil | Chile | Yamasaki ( Peru ) | 4: 2 (2: 1) | 1: 0 Garrincha (9th) 2: 0 Garrincha (32nd) 2: 1 Toro (42nd) 3: 1 Vavá (47th) 3: 2 Sánchez (61st) 11m 4: 2 Vavá (78th) |
On June 13, Chile and Brazil met in Santiago . With 76,594 visitors, the game attracted the most spectators at this World Cup. The parallel semifinals between Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia saw only 5890 spectators. In this game, too, the Brazilian ball magicians showed all their skills. Twice Vava and Garrincha ruined all of Chile's final dreams, which in turn came through Leonel Sánchez and Toro to the goals to make the final score 2-4.
3rd place match

In the game for third place, the hosts won 1-0 with a goal from Rojas against the Yugoslavs .
