Host Chile played in the preliminary round in Group 2 against Italy , Germany and Switzerland .
In the first group game, Chile defeated Switzerland 3-1 after a nervous start and deficit due to the later Nuremberg Bundesliga player Rolf Wüthrich .
On June 2, the match between Chile and Italy, which went down in World Cup annals as a scandal , followed in Santiago . Thanks to a disastrous referee performance, the almost brutal hosts came to an undeserved 2-0 win, with the Englishman Aston unilaterally disadvantaging the Italians, but turned a blind eye to the Chileans several times.
