Career
Club career
Carlos Contreras was born in the Chilean capital Santiago in 1938 and began his footballing career at the local club CF Universidad de Chile, to which he remained loyal for most of the further course of his career. For Universidad de Chile Contreras completed a total of 189 games in the league of Chilean football, in which he scored two goals.
In a team with other contemporary important Chilean football players such as Leonel Sánchez , Jaime Ramírez or Luis Eyzaguirre , Contreras' time at Universidad de Chile was marked by numerous successes. As the most successful Chilean club of the 1960s , it won the championship title six times between 1959 and 1969. In 1959 Contreras was part of only the club's second championship team, when today's record champions CSD Colo-Colo were defeated 2-1 in a playoff for the championship . The title win in 1962 was only necessary after a successfully contested play-off after the regular season had ended tied with CD Universidad Católica in first place. With a 5-3 success, Universidad de Chile secured the third title win in the club's history. In 1964, 1965, 1967 and 1969, four more championship titles were added to these successes, but this time they mostly came about with a clear lead over the first pursuer without a play-off. Overall, the phase in which Carlos Contreras was on the pitch for Universidad de Chile marked the most successful period in the club's history for a long time. After winning the title in 1969, the last for Contreras, his club remained without another championship until 1994, before another successful phase began that continues to this day.
Carlos Contreras stayed up to and including the 1969 season at Universidad de Chile and joined as the reigning Chilean champion in the following Antofagasta Portuario , which also played in the Primera División , Chile's highest football league. Contreras stayed in Antofagasta for two seasons before he let his career fade from 1972 to 1973 for another two years at the no longer first-class club CD Ferroviarios .
In 1973, the defender finally ended his football career at the age of 34 and retired from the football business. At the age of 81, Contreras died in the spring of 2020 after suffering from Alzheimer's disease for a long time .
National team
Between 1959 and 1966, Carlos Contreras completed a total of 30 international matches in the Chilean national football team . A goal he did not succeed. He was appointed to the South American squad for the 1962 World Cup in his own country by national coach Fernando Riera . Contreras was used in the tournament in five of the six games of the Chilean team.
They qualified second in group B, behind Germany , but ahead of Italy and Switzerland for the quarter-finals, where they got the upper hand 2-1 against the Soviet Union . In the semifinals, the reigning world champions Brazil then waited for the hosts. This time Chile couldn't prevail, the Brazilians won 4-2 and advanced to the final. The Chileans, however, had to be content with the game for third place, where Yugoslavia was defeated 1-0. This game for third place was the only game in the most successful World Cup of all time for Chile that Carlos Contreras missed. Otherwise, the defender from Universidad de Chile was a regular in the Chilean squad.
Following the World Cup, Contreras made international matches for Chile until 1966, but he was denied a new nomination for the World Cup in England in the same year . Contreras' career in the national jersey ended in 1966 after thirty appearances.
