Electrotechnical ship officer

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The electrotechnical ship's officer (ETO) is responsible for the safe operation of all electrical, electronic and electromechanical systems on a merchant shipping ship. He is not to be confused with the electrical engineering officer on German warships, who must have comparable knowledge and skills, but whose job description is defined in accordance with the rules of the Bundeswehr.

The number of electrically operated devices is increasing rapidly on modern ships. The degree of automation of non-electrical systems such as drive and hydraulics has increased significantly. Navigation and monitoring are highly digitized and the number of parameters to be monitored in the ship has risen sharply. In addition, there are more and more electrical components in the drive system, e.g. B. electrically operated thrusters , propeller pods and diesel-electric main engines . Larger ships also have powerful medium-voltage networks for power distribution.

In order to be able to maintain, repair and operate these systems, at least one ship's electrician has been required for a long time . On larger ships, the complexity increases to such an extent that additional qualifications are required for safe operation. The job description of the electrotechnical ship's officer is therefore laid down in the STCW Convention . Chapter III / 6 describes the requirements for the job description.

education

The seafarer qualification regulation describes the training approval for ETOA (electrotechnical officer's assistant), which essentially describes the career based on apprenticeships such as ship mechanic , ship electrician or electrician . A guideline in the Federal Traffic Gazette gives detailed information on the skills to be acquired. The training from ETOA to ETO is subject to the requirements of Appendix A-III / 6 of the STCW Convention. In Germany, the necessary qualifications can e.g. B. be acquired through a degree in marine electronics. In addition, ETOs must have certificates that they have completed training in fire fighting and operating lifeboats.
