The Lorlebergplatz (formerly Kaiser-Wilhelm-Platz ) is a place in Erlangen . It was created around 1890 as part of a Wilhelminian expansion of the city and forms the center of the so-called Oststadt .

history

In 1886, the city of Erlangen, under Mayor Georg von Schuh , decided to expand the city to the east, the first independent decision of Erlangen's city planning . The concept of the urban planner Söldner, which was implemented from 1889 to 1895, provided for the so-called "Rondell" at a central point, today's Lorlebergplatz. On July 16, 1897, in the course of the unveiling of the Kaiser Wilhelm monument, it was given the name "Kaiser-Wilhelm-Platz". It was the first monument in honor of Wilhelm II in Bavaria . The eleven meter high obelisk was already recognizable from the train station due to the linear street layout in the planned baroque city . In 1907 the Mohren pharmacy, which was founded in Heuwaagstrasse in 1696, moved its headquarters to Lorlebergplatz in Bismarckstrasse 13. In the course of this, the facade of the building was redesigned and given its current appearance. Since then there has been a figure of a Moor from the 18th century above the entrance .

In 1942 the obelisk was stripped of its bronze medallions ; these fell victim to “metal mobilization in public administration”. In 1946 the memorial was demolished. Various attempts to rebuild a memorial on the square have all failed. The application to set up an obelisk artistically designed by Herbert Martius in the center of the square was rejected by the city council in October 1999 with only a narrow majority . Since 1945 or 1949 the square has been named in honor of combat commander Werner Lorleberg , who handed Erlangen over to the US troops without a fight at the end of the Second World War . A memorial plaque is located at Haus Lorlebergplatz 2.

In the course of efforts to relieve the Wilhelminian style district around Lorlebergplatz from through traffic and to redesign it in the sense of a higher quality of stay, an ideas competition was carried out in 2014 . The winning design saw a with honey locusts passed center island with several benches in front. Motorized traffic should pass this traffic island in both directions to the west. On the east side of the square, which should remain free of motorized traffic, it was intended to be used for outdoor catering. However, due to massive protests by residents and homeowners, it was not realized. Through measures such as the conversion of the Bismarckstraße / Schillerstraße intersection and the redesign of the Schillerstraße / Loewenichstraße road in 2018/19, through traffic on Lorlebergplatz has already been reduced.

description

The circular architecture square with a green central island is unique in Erlangen and is located at the intersection of Universitätsstraße (formerly Frauenklinikstraße ), which leads west to the baroque Neustadt and the train station, with Bismarckstraße (formerly Kasernstraße ), which runs in north-south direction . The latter was created in the 19th century as part of a representative stretch of road, which was south and east led around the baroque city plan and new residential areas and barracks opened up . Fichtestrasse leads east to the Loewenich residential area , which was built at the end of the 19th century.

Adjacent buildings

The ensemble Bismarckstraße / Lorlebergplatz / Östliche Universitätsstraße , to which all buildings on Lorlebergplatz belong, is a listed building . The uniformly three-storey apartment buildings were built between 1889 and 1895 in the neo-renaissance style and are in excellent condition. Most of the buildings adjacent to the square have brick facades with sandstone structures and light-colored door and window frames.

Trivia

From a legal point of view, contrary to popular belief, Lorlebergplatz is not a roundabout despite its circular traffic layout with four access roads , as there are no roundabout signs in front of the access roads. Right before left applies, so - in contrast to the roundabout - the incoming traffic has right of way. Parking spaces are also shown on the site; Parking would not be allowed on a roundabout.
