Herbert Martius

Herbert Martius (born July 9, 1924 in Erlangen ; † October 17, 2009 there ) was a German painter and graphic artist.

Life

After graduating from high school, Martius became a soldier and fought in World War II . When he was released from Soviet captivity in 1949, he returned to Erlangen.

He gained national fame primarily through his email work , such as the so-called “Emailhaus” (“Loverix Hostel”), a student residence in Rüsselsheim , whose approximately 1,000 m² exterior facade he designed in 1990/91.

Awards

  • In 1962 Martius was awarded a silver medal at the International Ceramic Exhibition in Prague.
  • In 1989 he received the City of Erlangen's Culture Prize, which he turned down.
