Ship mechanic is a training occupation in German seafaring .

The profession of ship mechanic was introduced in 1983, the tasks were previously carried out on deck by sailors and in the machine by engine attendant. The training period is three years. In an international comparison, there is no similar training occupation.

The apprenticeship as a ship mechanic is a dual occupation . The practical part is taught on ships recognized for the training, while the theoretical part is taught in the vocational schools in Lübeck- Travemünde , Rostock and Elsfleth .

The Vocational Training Center See provides the following structure for a three-year training:

  • 1. School time block of 12 weeks
  • Inter-company training over 9 to 13 weeks in the following areas:
    • Metal working 7 to 11 weeks
    • Training in fire protection, rescue and hazard prevention for two weeks in accordance with STCW VI / 1, 2, 3 and 6
  • On board training
  • 2nd school time block of 12 weeks (including final examination part 1)
  • On board training
  • 3rd school time block of 12 weeks (including final exam part 2)

The training time on board varies and depends on the area of ​​operation and the port calls of the ship.

Legal

According to the STCW code , a ship mechanic is certified according to STCW, Annex VII / 2. This includes, among other things, the deck security qualification (STCW, Appendix II / 4) and the machine guard certification (STCW, Appendix III / 4).

After passing the final examination, the vocational training center will issue a ship mechanic's certificate. The ship mechanic then receives his qualification certificate (certificate of qualification) from the BSH , which is internationally recognized by the STCW code.

The abbreviation GSM is used for ship mechanics in certificates of competency and certificates of proficiency in nautical ship service, marine radio service, technical and electrotechnical ship service, ship safety service and in security .

Merit

The training remuneration according to the wage tariff (HTV-See) from January 1, 2019 is staggered as follows:

  • 1st year of training 1,020 euros
  • 2nd year of training 1,273 euros
  • 3rd year of training 1,763 euros

During the service on land (school, other further training) the trainee is paid 70% of the training allowance.

From July 1, 2013, trained ship mechanics will receive between EUR 3,557 and EUR 4,192, depending on seniority, according to the wage tariff.

The activities of a ship mechanic differ considerably from one another and are heavily dependent on the type and size of the ship, the area and duration of the journey.

For example, no load securing is necessary on a cruise ship , while unlike on a research ship, no winches are used on a heavy lift carrier .

In principle, however, the following areas of activity can be defined:

  • Ship safety in terms of fire protection and rescue

Training opportunities

After completing training, there are training and further education opportunities at a technical college or university of applied sciences, for example with the professional goal of a nautical or technical watch officer .
