Arturo Maximo Yamasaki (born May 11, 1929 in Lima , Peru , † July 23, 2013 in Mexico City ) was a Peruvian-Mexican football referee . Until 1966 he represented the Peruvian Football Association . He then emigrated to Mexico, where he also took citizenship.

life and career

Arturo Yamasaki whistled a total of five games at the World Cup in Chile (1962), England (1966) and Mexico (1970). Among other things, he was entrusted with the quarter-final match between Yugoslavia and Germany on June 10, 1962 in Chile, which the German team lost 1-0.

Yamasaki gained notoriety as the referee of the so-called match of the century between Italy and Germany on June 17, 1970 during the Soccer World Cup in Mexico . According to German players, Yamasaki whistled very one-sidedly and favored the Italians. Uwe Seeler wrote in his memoirs under the title Thank you, football (2003):

“We noticed that the referee Yamasaki […] was completely on the side of the Italians. The pace became harder and harder, we threw everything forward after the break. But the Italian defense stood like a wall. In the 67th minute, Beckenbauer was fouled by Pierluigi Cera . A clear penalty, the audience agreed! But referee Arturo Yamasaki saw the foul outside of the box. We surrounded the referee and protested while Beckenbauer remained lying on the ground: He had dislocated his right shoulder. "

TV recordings of this scene, in which Beckenbauer injured himself, cannot justify a penalty kick. The former national coach Sepp Herberger found when showing the slow motion pictures on television that the referee's decisions were impartial.

Another career highlight was the triple final between CA Independiente and Peñarol Montevideo at the Copa Libertadores 1965 , in which Yamasaki whistled all three games within six days, which were played in three different countries.

After finishing his active career Arturo Yamasaki was the referee committee of the Mexican Football Association .
