Pierluigi Cera (born February 25, 1941 in Legnago ( VR ), Italy ) is a former Italian football player .

Career

The defender Pierluigi Cera played in the 1960s and 1970s for the club AC Cesena , US Cagliari and Hellas Verona . In 1969/70 he won the Scudetto , the Italian championship, with the US Cagliari under Manlio Scopigno . He was in the squad of the Italian national team at the Football World Cup in Mexico in 1970 , where he was runner-up and was used as a defender in the memorable match of the century in the semifinals against Germany . In the 67th minute of this game he fouled Franz Beckenbauer near the penalty area. Referee Arturo Yamasaki did not award a penalty to the annoyance of the German players. Beckenbauer dislocated his shoulder during the foul and had to continue playing with an arm sling.

Cera played a total of 18 international matches for Italy from 1969 to 1972. The Italian Football Association mistakenly led him as a goal scorer in a friendly match on October 17, 1970 in Switzerland ; in fact, however, the striker Sandro Mazzola scored the goal.
