Career

Club career

Sergio Navarro was born on February 20, 1936 in the Chilean capital Santiago and began his football career at the local club CF Universidad de Chile . The defender played for Universidad de Chile for ten years from 1955 to 1964 and made a total of 199 league games during this time, in which he scored four goals. Sergio Navarro celebrated his first championship with Universidad de Chile in the 1959 season. This year they finished first in the table, tied with CSD Colo-Colo , which made a playoff for the championship necessary, as the goal difference was not taken into account. In this, the team of coach Luis Álamos prevailed 2-1 and won the championship title for the first time in nineteen years and only for the second time in the club's history. It was the beginning of a successful era for the club, which culminated in five more championships until 1969. Sergio Navarro experienced two of them as a player at Universidad de Chile. The Primera División 1962 ended in first place tied with CD Universidad Católica , against which they had lost the championship final the previous year. This time Universidad de Chile did better and secured the title with a 5-3 victory. After they had to admit defeat to Colo-Colo the following year, Sergio Navarro's third championship triumph with Universidad de Chile was achieved in the 1964 season. With a comfortable nine-point lead over Universidad Católica they were again Chilean football champions.

After his third title with Universidad de Chile, Sergio Navarro changed clubs for the first time and from then on played for Colo-Colo. From 1965 to 1967, the defender played 31 league games in the jersey of the Chilean record champions, but, unlike before at Universidad, did not act as a long-term regular. With second place, Navarro achieved his best placement in the jersey of his new employer in the 1966 season. In 1968, Sergio Navarro played football for Unión Española for another year before retiring that same year at the age of 32.

National team

Between 1957 and 1962 Sergio Navarro made a total of 31 international matches for the Chilean national football team . However, he did not succeed in scoring. He was appointed to the South American squad for the 1962 World Cup in his own country by national coach Fernando Riera . At the tournament, the then 26-year-old defender of Universidad de Chile acted as captain of the host's selection. With Navarro as captain, Chile survived the preliminary round in second place behind the Federal Republic of Germany and ahead of Italy and Switzerland . After the Soviet Union was surprisingly eliminated in the quarter-finals , the Chilean selection at the 1962 World Cup only failed in the semi-finals against eventual world champions Brazil 2: 4. The subsequent game for third place was won 1-0 against Yugoslavia . Sergio Navarro was a regular as captain in the group stage and in the quarter-finals. After that, he was no longer considered by Riera in the defense of the Chilean national team.
