Jorge Luis Toro Sánchez (born January 10, 1939 in Santiago de Chile ) is a former Chilean football player .

Career

society

Jorge Toro began his professional career in his hometown Santiago de Chile at CSD Colo-Colo in 1959, where he played for the Chilean first division club for the next three years and won the Chilean championship with Colo-Colo in 1960. After the successful World Cup in 1962, he transferred to Italy to Sampdoria Genoa . After a season in Genoa and 16 games for the Blucerchiati , he moved to FC Modena . He rose with Modena in the 1963/64 season in Serie B, but stayed with the club for the following five years and established himself with the Northern Italians in Serie B. For the 1969/70 season he moved to Hellas Verona , returned but after only seven games back to Modena. In 1973 he left Italy and returned to Chile. Jorge Toro ended his career with Unión Española .

National team

The only 1.69 m tall CSD Colo-Colo player took part in the 1962 World Cup with the national team of his home country . In the second round match against Italy , which went down in history as the Battle of Santiago , the midfielder scored the decisive second goal for Chile, defeating the Italians 2-0. Chile qualified early for the quarter-finals. Toro paused in the last group game against Germany (0-2).

The Chilean team defeated the Soviet Union (2: 1) in the quarter-finals, but failed in the semifinals against eventual world champions Brazil (2: 4). Jorge Toro also scored a goal in that game.

Jorge Toro made a total of 22 international matches for Chile between 1959 and 1973. He played his last game at the age of 34 in the World Cup qualifier on April 29, 1973 in Lima against Peru (2-0). He was substituted on during the game against Francisco Valdés .
