1930 in Uruguay
Chile took part in the first soccer World Cup in Uruguay and signed the 29-year-old Hungarian György Orth as coach for the World Cup games. In Uruguay, Chile defeated Mexico 3-0 and France 1-0 in the only group of four in the tournament , but then lost 3-1 in the “group final” against neighboring Argentina . Since only the group winners reached the subsequent semi-finals, Chile was eliminated. At first, Orth did not have any further assignments as national coach.
1934 in Italy
For the first World Cup in Europe , the Chileans had initially registered and should have played against Argentina in the qualification , but then waived for association-internal reasons, so that Argentina qualified without a qualifier.
1938 in France
Chile had not registered for the first World Cup in France .
1950 in Brazil
For the first World Cup in Brazil , Chile had to play Bolivia in the qualification and lost 2-0 in La Paz . Since Argentina did not play, Bolivia and Chile qualified for the World Cup without further games.
In their second participation in the finals, the team was the first World Cup opponent for England , which participated for the first time and lost 2-0. They also lost 2-0 to Spain , which meant that they were eliminated in the preliminary round. Against the USA , it was 5: 2 at the end and the team said goodbye to the World Cup for 12 years.
1954 in Switzerland
In qualifying for the World Cup in Switzerland, Chile lost all four games against Brazil and Paraguay and only scored one goal.
1958 in Sweden
For the soccer world championship 1958 the Chilean team could not qualify again and had to let Argentina go first. Only one game against Bolivia was won, which ended up before Chile.
1962 in Chile
For the home World Cup , Chile did not have to qualify after the vote on the allocation of neighboring Argentina with 32:11 votes.
Chile won 3-1 against Switzerland in the opening game . The Swiss took the lead after seven minutes, but Leonel Sánchez equalized shortly before the break; in the second half, the hosts gained the upper hand and won with goals from Ramírez and Sánchez. This made Chile the first and, until 2014, the only team that was able to turn a gap in the opening game. In the second game against Italy , which made the headlines more for its brutality than its playful course, the hosts won 2-0 with two late goals and were thus qualified early for the quarter-finals. Due to the final 2-0 defeat against FR Germany , the Chileans lost first place in the table and had to play their quarter-final game in Arica . In the quarter-finals, the hosts met the Soviet Union and won 2-1. The semi-final against the defending champion from Brazil , which was attended by most of the spectators of this World Cup, lost Chile 2: 4. In the small final, Yugoslavia was defeated 1-0 and with third place achieved the best result to date. National coach Fernando Riera was then signed by the European Cup winner Benfica Lisbon as a coach and led the team again in the European Cup final, which was lost.
1966 in England
For the World Cup in England , Chile had to qualify in a group with Ecuador and Colombia . After four games each, Chile and Ecuador had 5-3 points and since the Chileans' better goal difference did not count, there was a play-off in Lima . This won Chile and was qualified for the first time. Luis Álamos , who had led the Universidad de Chile to the Chilean championship in 1959, 1962, 1964 and 1965, was hired as national coach for the World Cup . In England, the Chileans and their new playmaker Elías Figueroa were eliminated in the preliminary round with just one point from three games. There were defeats against Italy and the Soviet Union (0: 2 and 1: 2) and against World Cup newcomers North Korea only a 1: 1. For Álamos, his work as national coach ended for the time being.
1970 in Mexico
Again the Chileans could not qualify. In a group with Uruguay and Ecuador, Uruguay was stronger.
1974 in the Federal Republic of Germany
In qualifying for the 1974 World Cup in Germany , Chile was supposed to play against Peru and Venezuela , but they withdrew. At first there were only the two games against Peru, but they both won 2-0 at home. In the deciding game in Montevideo that was due , Chile then won 2-1 and had to play in play-off games against a European team for the last place in the final round - the opponent was the Soviet Union . The first leg in Moscow ended in a goalless draw, the second leg in Santiago de Chile should be played at the Estadio Nacional . However, the Soviets refused to play in this stadium, where several thousand opposition members were held, tortured and murdered in the first days of the Pinochet Putsch, and asked FIFA to postpone the game. Since this refused, the team of the USSR did not take part. The Chileans started the game, team captain Francisco Valdez shot the ball into the empty goal and since the subsequent kick could not be carried out, the referee stopped the game. The game was rated 2-0 for Chile, which qualified with it. For the finals, Luis Álamos was again committed as national coach, as Rudi Gutendorf had resigned after the military coup. In the final round, the Chileans lost the opening game 0-1 against hosts BR Germany . In the other group games there were two draws against the GDR (1: 1) and Australia (0: 0). During the first game against BR Germany, Carlos Caszely was the first player to receive a red card in a World Cup finals . For Álamos, the second term as national coach ended like the first.
1978 in Argentina
The qualification for the World Cup in the neighboring country was played in two rounds, but Chile was eliminated in the first round against Peru and could only relegate Ecuador to third place in the group.
1982 in Spain
In qualifying for the World Cup in Spain , Chile then beat Ecuador and Paraguay. In Spain, the Chilean team - led by the now 35-year-old Figueroa - lost after three defeats against Austria (0: 1), Germany (1: 4, with goalkeeper Mario Osbén looking particularly bad) and Algeria (2: 3) pointless in the preliminary round. Also, Luis Santibanez was dismissed after Vorrundenaus as national coach. The following three tournaments then took place without Chile.
1986 in Mexico
Again the Chileans failed in the qualification , which ran over three rounds for the Chileans. First, in the group stage, they finished second behind Uruguay and ahead of Ecuador after losing the last decisive game in Montevideo 2-1. In the second round, the placed teams played against each other. Here Chile met Peru and won 4: 2 and 1: 0, so that the third round against Paraguay was reached. In Paraguay they lost 3-0 and since the home game only ended 2-2, Chile did not qualify for the World Cup.
1990 in Italy
For the second World Cup in Italy , Chile was drawn into a qualifying group with Brazil and Venezuela . In the last World Cup qualifier against hosts Brazil in September 1989 at the Estádio do Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro , Chile needed a win, but were still 1-0 down after 67 minutes. When a fireworks landed near the Chilean goalkeeper Roberto Rojas , he marked an injury and was then carried away on a stretcher. The remaining Chilean players refused to continue the game because it would be unsafe. However, television records showed that there was no contact between the fireworks and Rojas. The game was rated 2-0 for Brazil in the end, which meant that Chile were eliminated. Chile was also excluded from qualifying for the 1994 tournament. Roberto Rojas was banned for life, but pardoned in 2001.
1994 in the United States
Chile was not allowed to qualify.
1998 in France
For the soccer World Cup 1998 , all South American teams except defending champion Brazil, who was automatically qualified, competed in a joint group for the first time and played four places in the everyone-against-everyone mode. Chile was able to qualify as fourth in the South American group ahead of the Peruvians with the same number of points. At the tournament in France, the team led by Iván Zamorano had three draws in the preliminary round against Italy (2: 2), Austria (1: 1) and Cameroon (1: 1) to advance, but in the round of 16 Chile lost to Brazil 1: 4 and said goodbye to the World Cup for 12 years. Nelson Acosta remained in office as national coach for two more years.
2002 in Japan and South Korea
In qualifying for the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea, all 10 South American teams competed again in a common group and played in an all-against-all mode. Chile was knocked off bottom of the group and could only win 3 of 18 games.
2006 in Germany
The Chileans were also unable to qualify for the 2006 World Cup in Germany . After all, it was enough this time to place 7 and in the end only three points were missing to reach at least the intercontinental playoff games. These three points were lost in the last two games, which were all drawn in Colombia and at home against Ecuador.
2010 in South Africa
The qualification for the Soccer World Cup 2010 in South Africa, however, was extremely successful for Chile, so that they qualified as second in the South American group, only one point behind group winners Brazil . In the first World Cup game against Honduras , the Chilean team won a soccer World Cup for the first time since the 1962 World Cup. With another win (1-0) against Switzerland , Chile qualified for the round of 16 despite the final 2-1 win against Spain , where they met Brazil again. After a 3-0 win, Chile was eliminated from the tournament.
2014 in Brazil
On the way to the 2014 World Cup, Chile qualified third in the South American group , four points behind the first-placed Argentines . Just like the two-time world champion, they had nine wins. At the same time, however, you had to accept six defeats, which is why it took until the last of the 16 game days before the qualification could be made perfect. In their native Santiago de Chile , Ecuador was defeated 2-1 on October 15, 2013 (local time) and the ninth World Cup participation was celebrated. This was the first time that Chile managed to qualify in sports twice in a row.
Before the World Cup, Chile was one of the secret favorites, especially after losing a friendly game in spring 2014 against eventual world champions Germany 0-1, but the game was largely dominated by the Chileans.
In the group stage of the finals , Chile first met Australia like 1974 and won 3-1, then Spain like 2010 and finally the Netherlands for the first time at a World Cup . By defeating the world and European champions Spain, who were eliminated in the preliminary round due to their defeat against Chile, Chile reached the round of 16 prematurely. Due to the final defeat against the Netherlands, Chile could not avoid another clash with Brazil in the round of 16, but this time only eliminated after a 2: 3 on penalties. Chile had the better chances towards the end of the game.
2018 in Russia
In the qualification all 10 CONMEBOL members joined since October 2015 back to home and away matches against each other. The best four teams qualified directly, the fifth had to play against a member of another confederation in playoff games. Chile started with a home game against record world champions Brazil, which was won 2-0, which was the first time in 15 years to win again against the Brazilians. The second game against Peru was won, this time 4: 3. Against Colombia it was only enough to score 1: 1 and the last game in 2015 was lost 3-0 in Uruguay, so that Chile was initially on the relegation place. In the southern winter of 2015, Chile won the Copa America for the first time and repeated this success at the Copa America Centenario 2016 . In both cases, Argentina was defeated on penalties in the final.
However, there was a change of coach between the two tournaments: Jorge Sampaoli resigned in January 2016 and was succeeded by Juan Antonio Pizzi . Under Pizzi, however, the qualification was mixed: wins were followed by draws or defeats and vice versa. Nevertheless, the Chileans were still in third place before the last game, which meant direct qualification, but had only one point more than the fifth-placed Peruvians and sixth-placed Argentines and scored more goals than the Colombians tied on points. In the end they lost 3-0 in Brazil, while Argentina won in Ecuador for the first time since 2001 and Peru and Colombia also drew. As a result, the three teams passed the Chileans, who fell back to 6th place. So they couldn't qualify for the World Cup.
Another decisive factor was that they protested against the draw on September 6, 2016 against Bolivia because the Bolivians had used an ineligible player. The protest was accepted and the draw turned into a victory, giving Chile three points instead of one. But since the Bolivians had also used the player in their victory against Peru five days earlier, Peru's defeat was turned into a victory. As a result, the Peruvians had one point more than Chile in the end and reached the playoffs against New Zealand in fifth. Because of the missed qualification, the reigning South American champion could not qualify for the first time since 2002.

Share of players playing abroad in the World Cup squad
Legionnaires did not play a major role in the Chilean World Cup squad for a long time. Although Chile began in the 1950 World Cup as the only team a Legionnaire, but here it was the at Newcastle United playing George Robledo , who had emigrated at the age of 5 years with his parents to England. In 1974 and 1998, a few legionaries were deployed, and from 2010 they made up the majority in the squad.

Games
The Chileans have played 33 World Cup games so far. Of these, 11 were won, 15 lost and 7 ended in a draw. A draw game, the last game so far, had to be extended because a winner had to be determined. The game was then lost on penalties.
The Chileans played the opening game once as hosts and had six home games. So far, the Chileans have had to face the hosts twice: 1974 in the preliminary round and 2014 in the round of 16.
Most often Chile played against Brazil; four times (1962, 1998, 2010 and 2014)
The Chileans lost three times (1962, 1974 and 2010) to the eventual world champions.
In 1962 in the semi-finals, in 1998 in the second round and in 2014 in the preliminary round, the Chileans played against the defending champions.
The Chileans met World Cup newbies five times: 1950 / England, 1966 / North Korea, 1974 / GDR and Australia and 1982 / Algeria, and remained without a win.
Chile has so far played against teams from all confederations, which only Brazil, Germany, Italy, Croatia, Scotland and the USSR achieved.
The Chilean team is the second team to have played against all German-speaking World Cup participants: Switzerland and Federal Republic of Germany 1962, GDR 1974, Austria 1982. This was previously only achieved by the Dutch and then by Brazil.
