World Cup tournaments
World Championships 1930 and 1934
The Football Association of Indonesia was founded on April 19, 1930, although Indonesia was under Dutch rule until 1949 as the Dutch East Indies (sometimes also called "Dutch East Indies"). The first international match was played on May 13, 1934. Therefore the Dutch East Indies did not yet take part in the first World Cup and in 1934 they did not participate.
World Championship 1938
In addition to the Dutch East Indies, only one other Asian team, Japan, registered for qualification for the World Cup in France . Since Japan withdrew their participation, the Dutch East Indies qualified for the World Cup without a qualifier.
In France, the team met in their first World Cup game and the first game outside of Asia in Reims on Hungary . It was only the fourth game for them, whereas the Hungarians had already played more than 200 games. Dutch Indies lost 6-0 and the World Cup was over for the team after one game. It has been the Indonesians' only World Cup game so far. The Indonesians did not play another game until 1951.
World Championship 1950
For the first World Cup qualification after the Second World War , four teams from Asia had registered, including the now independent Indonesia. The qualification was to be played in two rounds, but after all teams except India withdrew their qualifications, India had qualified for the World Cup finals without a fight. Later, however, India also waived its right to start, as the players were not allowed to play barefoot.
World Championship 1954
On the qualification for the World Cup in Switzerland Indonesia also took no part. South Korea qualified for Asia for the first time.
World Championship 1958
The Indonesians then took part in qualifying for the World Cup in Sweden . On May 12, 1957, they played their first World Cup qualifier in Jakarta and won 2-0 against the People's Republic of China , which also took part in the qualification for the first time. Three weeks later, they lost 3-4 in Beijing . Since the goals scored were initially irrelevant and the other group opponent, the Republic of China , had withdrawn, there was a third game in Rangoon that ended goalless. Indonesia was then declared the winner only because of the goals scored. In the final round, Indonesia, Israel , Sudan and Egypt , some of which had reached this round without a fight, would play for the Asian World Cup starting place. In the wake of the Middle East conflict , Sudan and Egypt refused to take on Israel. Indonesia, on the other hand, only wanted to play on neutral ground, which FIFA refused. Since Israel was the only team that accepted FIFA's terms and conditions but was not supposed to take part in the World Cup without a qualifying match, the Israelis were drawn from the group of European and South American teams who had only finished second and were still interested in doing so . The lot fell on Wales . The Welsh took advantage of this second chance and qualified for the World Cup for the only time so far. An Asian team was therefore not represented in the 1958 finals.
World Championships 1962 to 1970
Indonesia did not take part in the qualifications for the World Championships in Chile , England and Mexico .
1974 World Cup
In the qualification to determine the Asia-Oceania representative of the 1974 World Cup in the Federal Republic of Germany, the Indonesians then took part again. In the first round they had to compete in a tournament in Australia against Australia , Iraq and New Zealand . With only one win, two draws and three defeats, they only finished third and were eliminated. Australia then prevailed in the further course and qualified as the first Oceanic team for the World Cup finals.
World Championship 1978
In the first qualifying round Indonesia could not prevail against Hong Kong , Singapore , Malaysia and Thailand . Indonesia only won the last game against Singapore, which was already meaningless to them. Group winners Hong Kong then failed in the last round.
World Championship 1982
In qualifying for the World Cup in Spain , New Zealand and Australia were stronger in the first round. Only the Republic of China (Taiwan) and Fiji , which participated for the first time, ended up one point less behind Indonesia. Indonesia won only the home games against the Republic of China and Australia and reached two draws against Fiji. Group winners New Zealand could then qualify for the first time for the World Cup finals in the further course of the qualification.
1986 World Championship
In the qualification for the second World Cup in Mexico , one East and one West Asian team each qualified. In the first round of the East Asia qualification, Indonesia faced India , Thailand and Bangladesh , which participated for the first time. With four wins and one draw and one defeat, the Indonesians were group winners. In the semi-finals of the East Asian group they then lost twice against South Korea, which qualified in the final against Japan as a representative of East Asia for the World Cup finals in Mexico.
World Cup 1990
In qualifying for the second World Cup in Italy , Indonesia was unable to prevail against North Korea in the first group stage and was only third behind Japan and ahead of Hong Kong. Only the game against Hong Kong was won, two games lost and three draws.
World Championship 1994
In qualifying for the World Cup in the USA , Indonesia was unable to prevail against North Korea , Qatar , Singapore and Vietnam in the first round at tournaments in Qatar and Singapore . Indonesia won only one game against Vietnam and lost all seven remaining games. Group winners North Korea then failed in the final tournament as bottom group.
World Championship 1998
In qualifying for the second World Cup in France , Indonesia failed again in the first round, this time to Uzbekistan , which participated for the first time, and Yemen . Cambodia , which was also participating for the first time and against which they won the only victory, played no role.
World Championship 2002
The qualification for the first World Cup in Asia , which was held in Japan and South Korea, went a little better . After China, in the first round, they came in second, ahead of the Maldives and again Cambodia. The qualification was lost due to the defeat against China, the four other games were won. China then qualified for the World Cup finals for the first time in the second round.
World Championship 2006
In qualifying for the second World Cup in Germany , Indonesia was directly qualified for the first main round by bye. There, Indonesia could not prevail against Saudi Arabia and Turkmenistan in group 8 of the Asia zone . Only two games were won and a draw was also achieved, but three games were lost. Group winner was Saudi Arabia, which then qualified for the World Cup.
World Championship 2010
In qualifying for the first World Cup in Africa , Indonesia was supposed to play Guam in the first round , but since Guam withdrew, the second round was reached without a fight. In this qualification ended with two defeats (1: 4 and 0: 7) against Syria . Syria then failed in the third round.
World Championship 2014
In qualifying for the second World Cup in Brazil , Indonesia prevailed in the second round after a 1-1 draw in Turkmenistan with 4: 3 in the home game against the Turkmen. But after a 4: 1 lead you still had to accept the hits to 4: 2 and 4: 3. In the 3rd round all six games against Iran , Qatar and Bahrain were lost, so that only the last group place was occupied.
World Championship 2018
In June 2015, Indonesia was excluded by FIFA in consultation with the AFC because the Indonesian government interfered in association matters. The team could therefore not take part in the qualification.
Games
Indonesia is the only team to have played one World Cup game so far. Since no substitutions were allowed at the time, only 11 players were used, all of whom only played one World Cup game. The defeat against Hungary is the only one against Hungary. The captain of the game was Frans Meeng .
