World Championships 1930 to 1962

Trinidad was occupied by the British in 1797 and in the Peace of Paris in 1814, Tobago also became the property of Great Britain. It was not until 1958 that Trinidad and Tobago became independent from Great Britain and part of the West Indian Federation . The federation broke up in 1962 and on August 31, Trinidad and Tobago finally gained independence. The Trinidad and Tobago Football Association was founded in 1908, but was only accepted into FIFA after independence in 1964 . Therefore, Trinidad and Tobago could not take part in the first seven World Cup tournaments.

1966 World Cup in England

On the qualification for the World Cup in England Trinidad and Tobago took part for the first time then. On February 7, 1965, the team played their first World Cup qualifier against Suriname in Port of Spain and won 4-1. This was followed by two defeats against Costa Rica and one defeat against Suriname, leaving Trinidad and Tobago bottom of the group. Costa Rica then failed in the final round to Mexico .

1970 World Cup in Mexico

Since Mexico was automatically qualified for the World Cup in their own country , the CONCACAF teams were entitled to another starting place. 12 teams competed for this. Trinidad and Tobago failed in the first round to Haiti and Guatemala , but neither of them could qualify for the World Cup. The qualification was gambled away in the first three games, two 0: 4 and one 0: 0. The 4-2 win in Haiti was then meaningless.

World Cup 1974 in Germany

Trinidad and Tobago also failed to qualify for the first World Cup in Germany . The team was able to prevail in the first round of qualification against Suriname and Antigua and Barbuda and in the second round with a gymnast in Port-au-Prince ( Haiti ) took second place ahead of Mexico. Since the CONCACAF teams were only entitled to one starting place in the finals this time, this went to Haiti , which had used the home advantage and thus surprisingly qualified for the only time so far and surprised the Italians in Germany.

1978 World Cup in Argentina

Trinidad and Tobago could not qualify for the World Cup in Argentina either. In the first round of qualification , the team prevailed in three games (1: 2, 1: 0 and 3: 1) against Barbados . In the second they failed after 300 minutes of play (1: 1, 2: 2 and 2: 3 afterwards) to Suriname, which could not qualify.

1982 World Cup in Spain

In qualifying for the World Cup in Spain , for which the CONCACAF teams were again entitled to two starting places after increasing the field of participants, Trinidad and Tobago failed in the first round in Caribbean Group B to Haiti and the Netherlands Antilles , there in four Playing only one goal could be scored.

1986 World Cup in Mexico

The qualification for the second World Cup in Mexico , for which the CONCACAF teams were granted only one additional starting place in addition to hosts Mexico, did not go any better. Since Grenada did not start in the first round, Trinidad and Tobago reached the second round without a fight. In this the team could not prevail against Costa Rica and the USA . Group winners Costa Rica then failed in the last round to Canada , which qualified for the first and so far only time for the World Cup finals.

1990 World Cup in Italy

The qualification for the second World Cup in Italy was a bit more successful. In the qualifying round, the team prevailed 4-0 and 1-0 against Guyana . In the CONCACAF finals, which was held at the same time as the CONCACAF Nations Cup in 1989 , Costa Rica and the USA prevailed against Trinidad & Tobago as well as Guatemala and El Salvador . This was the first time that Costa Rica took part in the World Cup and the USA for the first time since 1950. Both of them also benefited from the fact that Mexico , which had fielded older players in a junior tournament, was suspended by FIFA.

1994 World Cup in the United States

In qualifying for the World Cup in the USA , Trinidad and Tobago beat Barbados 2-1 and 3-0 in the first round, but then failed to Jamaica , as the home game was lost 2-1 and in the away game only a 1: 1 succeeded. Jamaica then also failed in the second round.

1998 World Cup in France

In the qualification for the second World Cup in France , for which the CONCACAF teams have now been granted three starting places, Trinidad & Tobago could not qualify either. At first they benefit from the fact that Bermuda withdrew and also won twice (4: 1 and 8: 0) against the Dominican Republic , but in the semi-finals they only finished last behind the USA, Costa Rica and Guatemala, and they only came in Home game against Guatemala won a point. In addition to the USA and Mexico, Jamaica was surprisingly able to qualify for the World Cup finals for the first time.

World Championship 2002 in Japan and South Korea

The qualification for the first World Cup in Asia then proceeded as before. In the first round the Netherlands Antilles were eliminated with 5: 0 and 1: 1, then the Dominican Republic with 3: 0 and 1: 0, and Haiti with 3: 1 and 1: 1. In the CONCACAF intermediate round, Trinidad & Tobago even took first place ahead of Mexico, Canada and Panama . The CONCACAF final round was the final destination for Trinidad & Tobago. Costa Rica won 6 points ahead of Mexico and the USA, which also qualified. Honduras , Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago - last in the group - were left behind.

World Cup 2006 in Germany

The qualification for the second World Cup in Germany finally succeeded . The Caribbean country went into qualification under Bertille St. Clair and started again with two wins (2-0 and 4-0) against the Dominican Republic in the second round. The team finished the third round in second place behind Mexico in front of St. Vincent and the Grenadines as well as St. Kitts and Nevis , with only the two games against Mexico being lost, all others being won. In the fourth round, the team started with two defeats and one draw. In May 2005 Leo Beenhakker took over the coaching post. Under him, the USA, Mexico and Costa Rica, which qualified directly, came fourth, ahead of Guatemala and Panama . This authorized Trinidad & Tobago to participate in the intercontinental playoff games. In these, the team met Bahrain in Port of Spain on November 12, 2005 , but only achieved a 1-1 draw. In the second leg four days later in Manama , however, a 1-0 victory was achieved and thus the first qualification for the World Cup finals.

In Germany, the team was drawn into a group with Sweden , England and Paraguay . The World Cup started unhappy. Goalkeeper Kelvin Jack , who had saved the qualification against Bahrain with an artistic parade shortly before the final whistle, was injured while warming up for the opening game against Sweden . Shaka Hislop replaced him, although he did not concede a goal, but his teammates did not score against the opponent's substitute goalkeeper - his regular goalkeeper had also been injured during the warm-up - neither. With that, Trinidad & Tobago had won their first World Cup point, even though they had to play 44 minutes short because of the yellow-red card for Avery John . In the second game against England they also kept the 0-0 for 82 minutes. Then Peter Crouch succeeded through an unfair effort by pulling Brent Sancho's hair, the 1-0 for the favorite. In stoppage time, Steven Gerrard then increased to 2-0 for the English. The game against Paraguay ended with the same result, with which the team from the Caribbean said goodbye to the World Cup for at least 12 years. With the preliminary round ended the tenure of Leo Beenhakker and he took over the Polish national football team , which he led to the first European Championship participation .

World Cup 2010 in South Africa

Trinidad & Tobago could not qualify for the first World Cup in Africa . The qualification started for Trinidad & Tobago in the second round with a 1: 2 home defeat against Bermuda. This could be compensated for by a 2-0 away win. The third round was successfully completed together with the USA against Guatemala and Cuba , with only the USA losing. In the fourth round, however, only 6th place was occupied behind the USA, Mexico, Honduras, Costa Rica and El Salvador. The first three qualified again directly, Costa Rica failed in the intercontinental playoffs to Uruguay .

2014 World Cup in Brazil

Trinidad & Tobago could not qualify for the second World Cup in Brazil . In the second round , for which Trinidad & Tobago was automatically qualified, the team failed due to Guyana . Only Bermuda and Barbados could be relegated to the places. Guyana then failed in the third round.

World Cup 2018 in Russia

In qualifying for the World Cup in Russia , Trinidad & Tobago only had to intervene in the fourth round. From November 2015, opponents were the USA , St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Guatemala . With three wins, two draws and one defeat, the team reached the fifth round. Here the crew met Costa Rica, Honduras, Mexico, Panama and again the USA. After nine of ten games, the team was in last place in the group and before the last game they were seven points behind fourth place, which entitles them to playoffs against the fifth in the AFC qualification. It was no longer possible to participate in the World Cup again. A win in the last game against the USA also blocked the way to Russia for the Americans.
