Christopher Birchall (born May 5, 1984 in Stafford , United Kingdom ) is a football player who is internationally eligible to play for Trinidad and Tobago . Birchall plays in midfield, mostly on the right outside and is also very active on the offensive. Birchall played for Port Vale since he was ten , from where he moved to Coventry City in 2006 . Although he was born in England, he decided to play internationally for the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association because of his mother, who was born in Trinidad; is currently in the senior squad of his home country's national team . Birchall is only the Caribbean nation's second “white” national player since the 1940s .

Club career

Birchall began his career as a professional footballer at Port Vale and became a regular for the club in 2005. His goal against Barnsley FC was voted best goal of the year. For the 2006/07 season he moved to the next higher, second division of England, the Football League Championship , to Coventry City .

In May 2009 Birchall was signed by the Major League Soccer club Los Angeles Galaxy and signed a contract until December 30, 2013.

In January 2012 he moved to Columbus Crew . After just a year he returned to his hometown club Port Vale .

National team

Birchall made his debut at the age of 21 in May 2005 in two friendly matches against Bermuda in Trinidad and immediately became a regular. Birchall scored four goals in his 44 international matches, including a very important one in the relegation second leg against Bahrain , which was decisive for the 2006 World Cup participation and secured qualification. He was therefore also nominated for the finals in his home country for the 2006 World Cup, in which he played through all the games up to the end in the group phase.
