World Cup tournaments
1930 in Uruguay
Egypt, which had played international games since 1920, took part in the Olympic Games in 1920, 1924 and 1928 and in 1924 in a 10-0 win over Lithuania had achieved the highest victory of an African against a European team to date, did not take part in the first World Cup .
1934 in Italy
At the first World Cup in Europe Egypt wanted to participate as the only African team, and had to ensure against Palestine / Eretz Israel Turkey qualify . Turkey withdrew, however, so that there were only the two games in Cairo and Jerusalem against a team made up of exclusively Jewish immigrants. In Cairo they won 7-1, in Israel 4-1. The Israel Football Association counts these two games as Israel's first games. In Italy, the Egyptian team met Hungary in the round of 16 and lost 4-2. Abdel Rahman Fawzy scored both goals for Egypt . With that, Egypt said goodbye to the World Cup for 56 years.
1938 in France
Egypt had also registered for the first World Cup in France and was supposed to play against Romania in qualifying , but withdrew, so that no team from Africa took part.
1950 in Brazil
Egypt had taken part in the 1948 Olympic Games in London, but neither did other African teams take part in the second World Cup in South America .
1954 in Switzerland
For the soccer World Cup 1954 Egypt had to play against Italy in the qualification and lost both games (1: 2 and 1: 5).
1958 in Sweden
For the soccer world championship in 1958 , Egypt, which won the first African championship in 1957, was supposed to play against Cyprus , but did not play. In the subsequent final round, Egypt, Indonesia , Israel and Sudan should compete against each other. Because of the Middle East conflict , Sudan and Egypt refused to take on Israel. Indonesia, on the other hand, only wanted to play on neutral ground, which FIFA refused. Israel was then drawn from the pool of runners-up from all other groups (Belgium and Uruguay waived) with Wales, an opponent. Wales beat the Israelis in two games and qualified for the finals for the only time to date.
1962 in Chile
For the third World Cup in South America , Egypt, which had also won the second African Cup, registered as the United Arab Republic and was supposed to play against Sudan. However, both withdrew because FIFA did not allow them to play outside of the monsoon season .
1966 in England
For the World Cup in the "motherland of football" , Egypt should play against Libya and Nigeria in the qualifying round . But since the teams from Africa, Asia and Oceania were only allowed one place in the final round, all 15 African teams withdrew.
1970 in Mexico
For the first time ever, the Africans were entitled to a direct starting place for the first World Cup in Central America, but Egypt had not registered. Morocco was able to qualify for Africa, but did not survive the preliminary round.
1974 in Germany
In qualifying for the first World Cup in Germany, Egypt, which was coached by Dettmar Cramer , met Tunisia in the first round . After a 2-1 win in Cairo , they lost 2-0 in Tunis , which meant that qualification was missed. Tunisia then eliminated in the second round against Ivory Coast , which ultimately could not qualify.
1978 in Argentina
For the fourth World Cup in South America , Egypt first had to play against Ethiopia in qualifying and won both games (3-0 and 2-1). In the second round Kenya was the opponent and after a 0-0 win in Nairobi , the second leg in Cairo was won 1-0. In the third round, Zambia was the opponent. After a 2-0 win in Cairo, a 0-0 win in Lusaka was enough to reach the final round. Here Egypt, Nigeria and Tunisia played for the finals for Africa. The round started badly for Egypt with a 4-0 draw in Lagos against Nigeria. The two home games were then won, but the decisive game in Tunis was lost 4-1, so that Tunisia could qualify for the first time.
1982 in Spain
For the qualification for the World Cup on the Iberian Peninsula , in which the Africans were granted two places for the first time, Egypt should first play against Ghana , which however withdrew. The next opponent, Libya , also withdrew. Morocco were the opponents in the third round and after a 0-1 in Morocco the goalless draw in the second leg was not enough to reach the last round. In this, however, Morocco also failed to Cameroon , which qualified for the first time.
1986 in Mexico
The qualification for the second World Cup in Mexico meant that Egypt first had to face Zimbabwe for the first time . A 1-0 win in Cairo and a 1-1 draw in the second leg in Harare was enough to advance. Against Madagascar , which was also being played for the first time, a penalty shoot-out was then necessary. Since both won their home games 1-0, this had to decide in Antananarivo about progress. The Egyptians won 4: 2. In the third round, Morocco was stronger: after a goalless draw in Cairo, the Moroccans won 2-0 in Casablanca . In the final round they were able to prevail against Libya and reach the final round for the second time. There they were the first African team to survive the preliminary round and were only eliminated in the second round against Germany .
1990 in Italy
To qualify for the second World Cup in Italy , Egypt only had to face Liberia , Malawi and Kenya in the second round . The third round was reached as group winners with only one defeat. This is Egypt deposed after a 0: 0 in Constantine against Algeria with a 1: 0 in the second leg in Cairo by and thus qualified after 56 years again for the World Cup.
In Italy, the Egyptians had to face the Netherlands , Ireland , which participated for the first time, and England . In the first game against the Netherlands a 1-1 draw was won. Against Ireland they won a point with the 0-0 win. With a 1-0 defeat against England, Egypt was eliminated from the bottom of the group and left the World Cup for 28 years.
1994 in the United States
For the qualification for the World Cup in the USA , the Egyptians were drawn into a group with Zimbabwe , Angola and Togo , which participated for the withdrawn team from Sierra Leone. Since Egypt couldn't win a game against Zimbabwe (1: 2 and 0: 0), they only finished second. Zimbabwe then failed in the second round to Cameroon.
1998 in France
The qualification for the second World Cup in France did not go much better. Egypt survived the first round with a bye without a fight, but then failed in the second round to Tunisia and could only leave Liberia and Namibia behind. In addition to the 1-0 defeat in Liberia, the decisive factor was that they did not win against Tunisia (1-0 and 0-0).
2002 in Japan and South Korea
In qualifying for the first World Cup in Asia , Egypt prevailed in the first round 2-0 and 4-2 against Mauritius , which was played for the first time. In the second round, Senegal , Morocco , Algeria and Namibia were the opponents. In the first three games against Senegal, Morocco and Namibia, which ended in a draw, Egypt lost the qualification. This was followed by victories, but a 0: 1 in Morocco and a final 1: 1 in Algeria were not enough to make it to the World Cup finals.
2006 in Germany
Egypt was also unable to qualify for the second World Cup in Germany . After a bye in the first round, Ivory Coast , to which both games were lost, and Cameroon were stronger in the second round . Only Libya, Sudan and Benin could still be relegated to the places. For the Ivory Coast this meant the first successful qualification for a World Cup finals.
2010 in South Africa
The qualification for the first World Cup in Africa also failed. The Egypt, 2,008 won for the sixth time the African Cup, sat down while in the second round against Malawi , the Democratic Republic of Congo and Djibouti through, with only the game in Malawi was lost in the third round but was then the decider against Algeria lost. This became necessary after both had scored 9: 4 goals and 13 points in a group with Zambia and Rwanda and had won against each other with the same goal difference. After the last qualifying match in Cairo on November 14th, 2009, Algerians suffered injuries from Egyptian fans, but the Egyptian press did not, or at best, reported heavily. In the Algerian press, on the other hand, there was initially talk of deaths, which were later denied by the official government side. After the playoff in Sudan, Egyptians were attacked by Algerians. The Egyptian media at times spoke of several dozen dead until these reports were corrected again. In the meantime there was great excitement, especially among the Egyptian population; Among others, Gamal Mubarak , the Egyptian general secretary of the political committee of the ruling National Democratic Party and son of the then President Husni Mubarak , spoke up .
2014 in Brazil
In qualifying for the second World Cup in Brazil, Egypt prevailed in the group stage with six wins against Guinea , Mozambique and Zimbabwe . In the subsequent playoffs, however, the team lost the first leg in Ghana 6-1. The 2-1 win in the return leg in Cairo was not enough to qualify for the World Cup finals.
2018 in Russia
In qualifying , the team only had to intervene in the second round, which took place in November 2015. Opponent was Chad , winner of the first round encounter against Sierra Leone . After losing 1-0 to Chad for the first time in Chad, three days later they won 4-0 at Borg el-ʿArab and reached the third round. In this, the Egyptians prevailed against Ghana, the Republic of Congo and Uganda. The qualification succeeded on the penultimate matchday with a 2-1 win against the Republic of the Congo. Here was Mohamed Salah brought the Egyptians in the 63rd minute lead and, after the compensation of the Congolese in the 88th minute, a penalty for Egypt in the fifth minute of stoppage time.
Shortly before the World Cup , Salah suffered a shoulder injury in a duel with Sergio Ramos in the 2018 UEFA Champions League final , which put his participation in the World Cup into question. He was still nominated, but was spared in the first group game. The Egyptians lost this with a goal a minute before the end of the season with 0: 1 against Uruguay . In the second game against Russia he was used, but was only able to correct the result in the 1: 3 against Russia by converting a penalty after 0: 3 deficit. With the two defeats, Egypt no longer had a chance to reach the round of 16. In the last game against Saudi Arabia he put his team in the lead, but the Saudis were able to turn the game around and win 2-1.
