Gamal Mubarak
Gamal Mubarak ( Arabic جمال مبارك Gamāl Mubārak , full nameجمال الدين محمد حسنى سيد مبارك Gamāl ad-Dīn Muḥammad Ḥusnī Sayyid Mubārak , Egyptian-Arabic : ɡæˈmæːl edˈdiːn mæˈħæmːæd ˈħosni moˈbɑːɾɑk , allegedly also "Jimmy Mubarak" ; * December 27, 1963 ) is a politician and banker with an Egyptian and British passport and the second son of the former Egyptian President Husni Mubarak and his wife Suzanne .
Although Gamal has no military background, he tried - unlike his older brother Alaa Mubarak - to pursue a political career in Egypt. It was widely expected that he would run for the planned presidential election in September 2011. His father had left it open whether he would run again. After the beginning of the revolution in 2011 , Gamal Mubarak was not seen again in Egypt and was believed to be in London. On April 12, 2011, he was summoned to a court in Cairo by Egypt's attorney general to comment on allegations of corruption. The next day he was detained for 15 days for investigative questioning into allegations of corruption. On June 2, 2012, the proceedings against him and his brother Alaa were dropped due to the expiry of the statute of limitations.
Life
Early years
Gamal Mubarak studied economics at the American University in Cairo from 1981 to 1985 . The banker was Vice President of the Europe, Middle East and Africa Section of America International Bank in London ( Bank of America ) from 1988 to 1994 . His business area there concentrated on the area of issuing transactions. He returned to Egypt in 1996.
In 1997 he and a few colleagues established MedInvest Associates Ltd. which looks after private equity funds and advises companies on financial matters. Gamal Mubarak is the chairman of the Future Generation Foundation (FGF), an independent organization devoted to vocational training and targeting young people. He is also active in several non-governmental organizations, including one that deals with the construction of social housing.
Entry into politics
His father appointed him general secretary of the political committee in September 2002, making him the third most powerful man in the party and allowing him to control much of the government's key activities. The National Democratic Party (NDP) has a majority of seats in parliament.
After the cabinet changes in July 2004 and the appointment of Ahmad Nazif as the new Prime Minister of Egypt, the cabinet was called "Gamal's Cabinet" because almost all of the new ministers were chosen by the NDP's political committee.
Planned takeover
Though Mubarak and his father had denied it, it was widely expected that Gamal Mubarak would run in the planned Egyptian presidential election in September 2011. In early 2006, Gamal Mubarak insisted that he did not seek his father's post, but that he would continue to fill his position in the NDP as Deputy Secretary General. This post is part of the main body of the NDP.
A possible obstacle to taking power could have been the fact that Gamal Mubarak, unlike his father, has no military background. Since the military coup in Egypt in 1952 , all Egyptian presidents have come from the ranks of the army .
In September 2004 some (unofficial) political groups like the Kifaya expressed their displeasure with the political nepotism and demanded changes, above all free elections with more than one candidate. Mubarak's sons are also accused of having obtained lucrative stakes in countless companies such as Phillip Morris , Škoda Auto , Mövenpick , Vodafone , McDonald’s and many others without any investment . Plus, they can get bank loans for themselves and their friends with no collateral. They are said to use funds from charities to conduct illegal financial transactions, arms trafficking and money laundering . The sons' preferences should also include excursions into the world of drug trafficking and the illegal export of Egyptian art treasures.
On February 26, 2005, Husni Mubarak allowed several candidates to run for the September 2005 presidential election . To this end, Parliament changed Article 76 of the Egyptian Constitution. However, many see behind this step towards “free elections” a ruse that will later enable Gamal Mubarak to run for president.
On February 5, 2011 it was announced that Gamal Mubarak had resigned from the post of chairman of the political committee of the ruling National Democratic Party.
