The continental association CAF
The associations of the African Football Confederation ( CAF ) played for five places for the 2014 World Cup . The first qualifying round began on November 11, 2011.
With the exception of Mauritania, all CAF associations, which are also members of the world association FIFA , registered for the qualification . The draw for the matches of the 52 African teams took place on July 30, 2011 in Rio de Janeiro . Before the start of the first round, Mauritius also withdrew, so that 51 teams began qualifying. With the exception of South Africa , which hosted the 2010 World Cup , all African teams that were there in 2010 were able to qualify.
Regulations
According to FIFA regulations, the preliminary round matches in the form of group matches and cup matches can be played in home and return matches or, in exceptional cases, in tournament form in one of the participating countries. In the group games, three points are awarded for a win and one for a draw. The following criteria are decisive:
- higher number of points
- better goal difference
- higher number of goals scored
- higher number of points from the direct encounters between teams with the same points and goals
- better goal difference from the direct encounters between the teams with the same points and goals
- higher number of goals from direct encounters between teams with equal points and goals
- higher number of away goals from direct encounters between teams with the same points and goals if only two teams are affected.
If two teams do the same according to these criteria, a play-off can be scheduled.
In the cup games, if there is a tie after the two games, the higher number of away goals scored counts. If the number of away goals is the same, extra time is played. If no goal is scored in extra time, the match will be decided on penalties. If the same number of goals are scored in extra time, the away team qualifies due to more away goals scored.
mode
The 24 worst-placed teams played in two playoff games between November 11th and 15th, 2011 for 12 starting places for the second qualifying round. This took place between June 1, 2012 and September 10, 2013 with all 40 remaining teams. These played in 10 groups of four for 10 starting positions in the third qualifying round. The best in the group moved into the third qualifying round. The five playoff games for the final rounds then took place in the first and second legs between October 11th and 15th, 2013 and October 15th – 19th. November 2013.
First round
The 24 worst-placed teams played in two playoff games between November 11 and 16, 2011 for 12 starting places for the second qualifying round.
Note: On October 31, 2011, FIFA announced the withdrawal from Mauritius, which will automatically move Liberia into the next round.
Group stage
The twelve winners of the first round and the 28 teams that did not have to play them were divided into ten groups of four for the second round, in which a championship system with home and away games was played. The draw was part of the main qualifying draw on July 30, 2011 in Rio de Janeiro. The winners qualified for the playoffs.
