The Stade de Marrakech ( German  Stadium of Marrakech , Arabic ملعب مراكش) is a football stadium with an athletics facility in the Moroccan city ​​of Marrakech with a capacity of 45,240 seats, 36,300 of which are covered. Despite its rectangular shape, the playing field of the sports facility encloses an athletics facility with eight lanes. The Stade de Marrakech is state-owned.

history

Construction work on the stadium began in September 2003. The budget for the construction was between 935 million and 1 billion MAD (around 76 to 90 million euros ). The venue was planned as part of the Moroccan application to host the 2010 World Cup , but the contract went to South Africa. Nevertheless, work on the stadium continued, and after seven years and three months of construction, it was inaugurated on January 5, 2011 with the friendly matches of Kawkab Marrakech and Wydad Casablanca against French teams Olympique Lyon and Paris Saint-Germain . By fulfilling international standards in the fields of football and athletics, the stadium is suitable for competitions at a high level. A 84 m² LED screen provides viewers with all the important information.

The stadium is part of the program of the Moroccan application to host the 2015 African Cup of Nations .

From December 18 to 21, 2013, it was the venue for four games of the 2013 FIFA Club World Cup , including the final.

The 2nd Athletics Continental Cup took place here on September 13 and 14, 2014 .

The stadium was intended as the venue for the 2015 African Cup of Nations. Due to the refusal of Morocco to hold the tournament on the agreed date due to the Ebola epidemic in West Africa , the organizers were withdrawn from the tournament on November 11, 2014.

The stadium is located about 11 kilometers north of Marrakech . It has connections to the international Menara Airport and Marrakech main train station . There are 7,500 parking spaces available for stadium visitors. Access to the playing field is made possible through 16 entrance gates and one honorary entrance gate.

On an area of ​​58 hectares, the stadium has a capacity of 45,240 seats. 36,300 of these are covered, 200 seats serve as the royal grandstand, 600 as the grandstand of honor, 1,130 are provided for the press grandstand and 700 special places for the disabled are available. The remaining 42,610 places are intended for the public. Inside the stadium, there is a restaurant for up to 300 people, 24 snacks / Kiosks and 14 VIP - boxes . The venue has a press room with an area of ​​1,000 m² and a first aid center.

As hooligans rioted in the first home games of Kawkab Marrakech , 98 surveillance cameras were installed throughout the stadium.
