The Grand Stade de Tanger is a football stadium with an athletics facility in the Moroccan city of Tangier in the north of the country. It is also known by the name Stade Ibn Battouta ( Arabic ملعب ابن بطوطة, DMG Malʿab Ibn Baṭṭūṭa ), after the Tangier-born Ibn Battuta , a Muslim explorer of the 14th century . The facility replaced the Stade de Marchan as the venue for the IR Tanger football club ( Ittihad Riadi Tanger ).

history

VIP box in the stadium

After work began in September 2002, after a delay, the opening on April 26, 2011 could only be celebrated around nine years later. There was criticism about the new building. The stadium still looks unfinished today because of the unfinished stadium curves. Due to the open sides of the stadium, it is very drafty in the stadium. The lower tier of the main stand is barely protected by the roof. Further problems arose initially with the traffic connection due to traffic jams and in the entrance area at the turnstile systems with large numbers of spectators.

There were two soccer friendlies for the inauguration. First, the hosts were the IR Tanger against Atlético Madrid B at. They parted with a 1-1 draw. In the second game Raja Casablanca and Atlético Madrid met (1: 3).

The venue offers 45,000 seats, which are distributed across the covered, two-story main grandstand and the uncovered back straight. More seats can be found on the lower tiers of the stadium curves, which are prepared for a two-story extension. The spacious interior of the natural grass field is surrounded by a nine-lane, blue athletics facility. The sports facility designed by Jawad Khattabi is located at the entrance to the city of Tangier and is about seven kilometers from Tangier-Boukhalef International Airport .

The stadium has eight boxes with a total of 96 seats, ten boxes with a total of 50 seats and two lounges with 80 seats each. The grandstand offers 650 seats. 87 surveillance cameras are distributed over the entire area . The floodlighting reaches a luminous intensity , the FIFA norms accordingly, of 1,800 Lux (horizontal) and 2500 lux (vertical). There are six entrance areas with a total of 36 turnstiles.

The game for the French Trophée des Champions 2011 (French Football Supercup) was one of the first events in the new stadium in Tangier on July 27th of that year. Olympique Marseille beat Lille OSC in front of 33,900 spectators with 5: 4 goals. Three goals were scored after the 90th minute, two of which were penalties. The exciting game was only finally decided by a penalty kick in the fifth minute of stoppage time.

On August 12, 2018, the stadium hosted the Supercopa de España . The cup finalists FC Sevilla and the double winners FC Barcelona met . Barça won the game 2-1. The Frenchman Ousmane Dembélé scored the decisive goal in the 78th minute.

Soccer African Championship 2015

The stadium was to be one of a total of four venues for the 2015 African Cup of Nations. The other stadiums were the Stade Moulay Abdallah ( Rabat ), the Stade de Marrakech ( Marrakech ) and the Stade Adrar ( Agadir ). Due to the refusal of Morocco to hold the tournament on the agreed date due to the Ebola epidemic in West Africa , the organizers were withdrawn from the tournament on November 11, 2014.
