The Stade Adrar ( Arabic ملعب أدرار, Central Atlas Tamazight ⴰⴱⴰⵔⴰⵣ ⴰⴷⵔⴰⵔ Abaraz Adrar ; or Grand Stade d'Agadir ) is a football stadium with an athletics facility in the Moroccan city of Agadir . The sports facility, which opened in 2013 and has 45,480 seats, around 10,000 of which are covered in the main stand, is mainly used by the Hassania d'Agadir football club ( HUSA ). It replaced the outdated Stade Al Inbiaâte with only 15,000 seats. In addition, the Moroccan national soccer team uses the arena for international matches.

history

The stadium is about six kilometers east of Agadir city center and seven kilometers from the port. Al Massira International Airport is located 20 kilometers southeast of the stadium.

The new building for around 1 billion MAD (around 103 million euros) was originally intended as a venue in Morocco's bid for the 2010 World Cup . In the award, Morocco was defeated by 10:14 votes against South Africa .

In an international competition in 1999, the design by the architects Saâd Benkirane from Morocco and the Italian Vittorio Gregotti was selected for realization. Work on the stadium began in the presence of King Mohammed VI. on June 4, 2004. But they stalled because of the defeat in the vote for the 2010 World Cup. Construction continued in 2007 and should be completed by the end of 2009. The rapid implementation of the plan was prevented by financial difficulties.

In March 2012 the stadium was nearing completion according to the standards of FIFA and the IAAF World Athletics Association . However, this should last well into 2013.

On September 22, 2013, the Moroccan Football Association, Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football (FRMF) announced the official opening date for the Stade Adrar on October 11, 2013.

The surrounding grandstand ring of the stadium building, with its sloping exterior facade, looks like it was built on an earth wall. In the spacious interior, an eight-lane athletics facility encompasses the natural grass field . The tiers are fully equipped with seats. The approximately 45,000 seats include 5,000 VIP seats and 288 seats in the press box. This can be expanded by 340 seats for major events. The four concrete floodlight towers are recognizable from afar . The system, including the headlights on the roof, offers an illuminance of 2000 lux horizontally and 1800 lux vertically.

Visitors can enter the stadium at 18 entrances with 96 turnstiles . Visitors in wheelchairs can enter the eight designated entrances . There are 27 exits for quick evacuation . A video surveillance system with a total of 81 cameras is installed in the stadium area . There are around 5,000 parking spaces available at the stadium. To the north of the stadium there is a training ground with a running track and 700 lux floodlights. It has four cabins for the footballers, two for referees and eight changing rooms are available for the athletes.

Furthermore, the equipment of the Stade Adrar includes a room for press conferences with 180 seats, several radio and television studios, a panorama restaurant with 180 and a dining room with 200 seats. A video display board is attached to the upper tier in the stadium curves. A medical area with 126 square meters is used by athletes and referees alike. There are also two rooms for doping tests, each 55 square meters. 104 toilets are distributed in the stadium for visitors.

Opening games

The stadium was inaugurated with two soccer games. First, the home team Hassania d'Agadir against the Algerian team JS Kabylie from Tizi Ouzou . Saad Lemti scored the first goal in the new stadium in the 76th minute for Hassania . Then the national teams of Morocco and South Africa parted with a 1-1 draw.

Soccer African Championship 2015

As one of six Moroccan stadiums, the Stade Adrar in Agadir with the cities of Casablanca , Rabat , Fez , Marrakech and Tangier was planned as the venue for the 2015 African Cup of Nations. On November 11, 2014, the African Football Association CAF Morocco withdrew the continental tournament. The association came to this decision because the organizers refused to hold the Africa Cup on the agreed date from January 17th to February 8th 2015 due to the Ebola epidemic in West Africa .

African Nations Cup 2018

In addition to the Stade Mohammed V , the Stade de Marrakech and the Grand Stade de Tanger , the Stade Adrar is a venue for the 2018 African Nations Cup .
