al Ahly Sports Club ( Arabic الأهلى al-Ahlī , often also al Ahli , or Al Ahly Cairo ) is a football club from Cairo .

history

The club was founded on April 24, 1907 and is the most successful club in Egypt. So far he has reached 41 Egyptian championship titles and 36 cup wins. Al Ahly is also one of the strongest clubs in Africa and was voted "Club of the Century" by the CAF in 2000 .

In 1982, 1987, 2001, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2012 and 2013 al Ahly won the CAF Champions League , making it the record title winner of this competition. Since the team also reached the final in 2007, but was defeated by Étoile Sportive du Sahel , they got four finals in a row, which previously only Tout Puissant Mazembe (1967-1970) could show. In 1988 he also won the intercontinental Afro-Asian Cup .

At the FIFA Club World Cup in Japan in 2005 , the club came last as a representative of the CAF . With his title defense in the CAF Champions League, the team was qualified for the FIFA Club World Cup 2006 , where they reached third place. In 2008, the club took part in the FIFA Club World Cup for the third time . Here they were eliminated in the quarterfinals. With three entries, the club is the record holder in this competition.

The derbies with local rivals al Zamalek SC are very emotional. Foreign referees must be brought into the country on a regular basis to direct the games. Al Ahly celebrated the greatest success in the derby with a 6-1 win in a league game in the 2002 season. The biggest defeat was a 0: 6 in the 1943 cup final.

On February 1, 2012 there was an away game in Port Said against al Masry to serious fan riots , in which 74 people were killed and more than 1000 injured. The Ultras al-Ahlawy fan group had previously participated in the 2011 revolution in Egypt . The fan riots took place shortly after the anniversary of the uprising. The team al Ahlys then temporarily stopped the game.

The club has been trained by the Swiss René Weiler since August 2019 .
