The Tangier-Boukhalef ( IATA code TNG , ICAO code GMTT , Arabic مطار طنجة ابن بطوطة, French Aeroport Tanger Ibn Batouta ) is the international airport of the city of Tangier in Morocco . It is located around 14 kilometers southwest of the city.

Furnishing

The airport has a 3500 m long and 45 m wide asphalt runway with the name 10/28. An older 2000 m long run is closed. Seven jets can be parked. Tanger-Boukhalef has the longest Moroccan runway with Casablanca Airport . Tangier Airport is suitable for all types of aircraft, including the Boeing 747-400 used by Royal Air Maroc . Flight operations run 24 hours a day.

Iberia offers connections from German-speaking countries via Madrid , Vueling via Barcelona and TAP Portugal via Lisbon . Air Arabia Maroc and z. Sometimes Royal Air Maroc also flies from Tangier to the most important metropolises in Europe , including London , Paris , Amsterdam and Brussels . Ryanair flies weekly to Tangier from Bergamo , Brussels-Charleroi , Madrid , Marseille , Weeze , Paris-Beauvais-Tillé , Seville and Valencia and Eurowings from Cologne / Bonn (only in the summer season). There are also several seasonal flights from u. a. easyJet , TUIfly Belgium and Transavia .

modernization

The airport was completed in 2008 and renamed Tangier - Ibn Battouta Airport. The airport includes a runway and a state-of-the-art terminal, which, however, has no passenger boarding bridges . Due to the size of the new terminal, the annual capacity is estimated at around 1.5 million passengers per year.

Incidents

  • On March 31, 1965, came at a Convair CV-440 of the Spanish Iberia ( air vehicle registration EC-ATH ) on a flight from Malaga to Tangier Airport 18 kilometers west of the destination airport for unknown reasons to stall and crash into the sea. Of the 53 occupants, only three surviving passengers could be rescued from the sea.
  • On December 22, 1973, a Caravelle VI-N of the Belgian Sobelair (OO-SRD) , which was leased by Royal Air Maroc , was approaching Tangier airport in the dark and rain near the city of Tétouan in the Mellaline mountain in the Rif mountains flown. The pilots came off course to the east when approaching runway 28. At 10:10 p.m. the machine collided at a height of 701 meters with the Mellaline mountain in the Rif Mountains near the city of Tétouan.
  • On November 23, 1988, a Vickers Viscount 807 operated by Gibraltar Airways (G-BBVH) had an accident while landing at Tangier Airport. The plane coming from Gibraltar Airport, which is only 70 kilometers away , slipped after touching down to the left of the runway and over a shallow canal, causing irreparable damage. All 78 occupants, 4 crew members and 74 passengers survived the crash landing. The landing was carried out during a heavy rain shower with a tail wind of around 18 knots.
