The Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium is a football stadium with an athletics facility in the Tanzanian economic metropolis Dar es Salaam . It was named after Benjamin William Mkapa , the third president of Tanzania, who served from 1995 to 2005.

The complex was constructed from November 2004 to February 2007 by Beijing Construction Engineering Company Limited. Tanzania paid TZS 25 billion of the costs of 56.4 billion TZS (53 million US dollars ), the rest of the costs were borne by the Chinese government .

The stadium, which is currently mainly used for football matches , offers space for 60,000 visitors. It complies with FIFA and IOC standards. The Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium replaced the previous 25,000-seated national stadium, the Uhuru Stadium, built in 1961.
