The Stade du 28 Septembre is a football stadium with an athletics facility in the Guinean capital Conakry . The arena, which is currently mainly used for football matches , offers space for 25,000 spectators.

In the hope of being able to host the African Cup of Nations in 2016, it was intended to expand the sports facility to accommodate up to 80,000 spectators; then there should only be seats. The championships were awarded to Morocco - now for 2015. In the meantime, a new stadium has been built in Nongo near Conakry, which is sometimes also used for national soccer team games; there is space for around 50,000 visitors.

Surname

The facility was named in memory of the referendum on the Constitution of the Fifth French Republic on September 28, 1958. In Guinea, the referendum was voted “no” with a large majority. This eventually led to Guinea's independence from France on October 2, 1958.

September 28, 2009 massacre

On September 28, 2009, supporters of the political opposition gathered in the stadium to demonstrate against the authoritarian policies of President Moussa Dadis Camara and to demand his resignation. Security forces shot into the crowd; 157 people were killed and 1,200 injured. The Guinean government said 56 were killed by the shooting and the other people were trampled to death.
