The Mandela National Stadium , often referred to as the Namboole Stadium , is a multi-purpose stadium in Bweyogerere , a district of Kira Town , twelve kilometers east of the center of the Ugandan capital Kampala . It is mainly used for soccer games. 45,202 spectators find space. The construction was funded by the People's Republic of China with US $ 36 million .
The stadium was originally named Namboole Stadium after the surrounding mountains . It was later renamed in honor of Nelson Mandela . The facility was opened in 1997 with a concert by the South African musician Lucky Dube .
