The Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium ( French Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo , also known as Stade Omnisports ) is a multi-purpose stadium in the Cameroonian capital Yaoundé . It is mainly used for soccer games, but it also has a running track and can therefore be used for athletics competitions. The African Athletics Championships were held here in 1996 . The stadium has a capacity of 38,720 seats, which can be expanded to 52,000 for important games by converting a few blocks into standing room.
The stadium was built in 1972 for the African Cup of Nations , which took place in Cameroon that same year. The two clubs Canon Yaoundé and Tonnerre Yaoundé play their home games in the stadium, and the Cameroonian national football team plays most of their home games here.
The Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium is planned to be the venue for the 2021 African Cup of Nations .
