In 2006 Varela came into the squad of the first team of GD Estoril Praia , which played in the Segunda Liga at the time . In order to gain match practice, he was loaned to UD Rio Maior in the third class Segunda Divisão in early 2007 for half a year . There he was used regularly and returned to Estoril in summer 2007. There he came to the train more frequently. At the beginning of 2009 he left the club as he got the chance to move to CD Trofense in the Primeira Liga . With his new club he had to relegate to the Segunda League at the end of the season . He also stayed in the lower house in Trofa, where he developed into a regular player, but missed promotion. In the summer of 2011 he left the club and joined CD Feirense , which had instead achieved promotion. Also with his new club, he ended the 2011/12 season on a relegation zone.

Varela then left Portugal and moved to FC Vaslui in the Romanian League 1 . With the West Moldavians he missed the desired qualification for the Europa League . In early September 2013, he joined the reigning champion Steaua Bucharest . There he won his first title with the 2014 championship after establishing himself as a regular in the defense in the second half of the season. In the summer of 2016 he switched to PAOK Thessaloniki in Greece. There he and his team reached the runner-up in 2017 and won the cup . The cup success could be repeated a year later .

National team

On June 15, 2008 Varela played his first international match for the Cape Verdean national team in a World Cup qualifier against Mauritius . He was rarely used in the following years, but was in the squad for the 2013 African Championship . There he was used in all four games in his country. In the last group game against Angola , he scored the goal to equalize 1: 1 in a 2-1 win.
