Pontus Anders Mikael Wernbloom (born June 25, 1986 in Kungälv ) is a Swedish football player . The midfielder , who made his debut for the Swedish national team in 2007 , won the Swedish championship and the national cup with IFK Göteborg .

Career

Breakthrough in Sweden

Wernbloom first played for IK Kongahälla in his youth , before moving to the youth department of IFK Göteborg in 2003. In 2005, the offensive player moved up to the first division squad and came in his debut season to seven games for the club in the Allsvenskan . In the 2006 season, the young player had established himself in the regular formation and scored six goals in 23 appearances this season. He recommended himself for the Swedish U-21 selection , which was supervised by Tommy Söderberg and Jörgen Lennartsson . On May 24th of that year he made his debut on the occasion of a 3-1 success against the Polish junior national team at the side of players like Petter Andersson , Björn Runström and Oscar Wendt , which he was able to crown with the 1-0 lead. As a result, he established himself as a regular in the national team, with whom he played in the play-off games for qualifying for the U-21 European Championship finals in 2007 at the Serbian youth team after a 3-0 away win through a 0-5 defeat at home failed.

Due to his good performance, he moved into the focus of national coach Lars Lagerbäck and was appointed to the squad for a trip to America for the senior team. On January 18, 2007, he made his debut on the occasion of a game against Ecuador in the national jersey. In the subsequent 2007 season, Wernbloom continued at IFK Göteborg from the previous year and, with six goals this season, was one of the pillars of the team that won the Lennart Johansson Cup for the Swedish national championship. At the side of Niclas Alexandersson , Jonas Wallerstedt and Stefan Selakovic , he played 24 league games and reached the cup final against Kalmar FF , in which he was in the starting line-up. Winning the double was clearly missed after conceding goals from César Santin and Patrik Ingelsten due to a 3-0 defeat.

Before the beginning of the following season, Lagerbäck nominated Wernbloom again for the senior national team, so that he came to a second international match. Although he scored eight goals this season in the following season, it was enough for him with the club team only to third place in the final table behind champions Kalmar FF and IF Elfsborg . However, as in the previous year, she made it into the cup final and prevented KFF's double with a 5-4 win on penalties . Wernbloom was able to convert the last penalty to the triumph of the Gothenburg club against Petter Wastå . At the beginning of the 2009 season , he again confirmed the shape of previous years. Up until the summer break, he was involved in eight goals, either directly or through assists, and thus ranked behind Selakovic and Tobias Hysén within the club . At the end of May, coach Söderberg and Lennartsson nominated him for the U-21 European Championship finals in their own country at the end of May as a key support that helped the club to first place in the table during the summer break . With the team he reached the semi-finals of the tournament, in which they were eliminated against England on penalties.

Change abroad

Years in the Netherlands

With his good performance, Wernbloom attracted international attention. In April 2009 he announced his move to the Dutch honor division . The reigning champions AZ Alkmaar offered 30 million Swedish crowns to tie the offensive player for four seasons plus an option for another year. Initially due to various injuries - he therefore also missed the game for Johan Cruijff Schaal , which his club won against SC Heerenveen - mainly a supplementary player, he was able to find himself under the new coach who was newly signed in December, especially in the second half of his first season in the Netherlands Dick Advocaat to play in the starting line-up. At the end of the season he had contributed in 23 games to the renewed European Cup qualification as fifth in the table.

In summer 2010 Wernbloom got a new head coach with Gertjan Verbeek , as Advocaat left the club as the new national coach of the Russian national team . Under the new head of training, he advanced to the side of Maarten Martens , Jóhann Berg Guðmundsson and his compatriot Rasmus Elm to become a regular in the right midfield. At the same time he established himself as a regular in the national team. In the opening game for qualifying for the European Championship 2012 in September 2010, he crowned his starting eleven in a competitive match for the selection with a brace to win 2-0 over the Hungarian national team .

While Wernbloom stuck with the national team behind the national team of the Netherlands in qualifying group E, he fluctuated with his club within the league. After a bad start with only three points from the first five games, a series of five wins followed, after which the team only lost one game until the end of the first half of the season. In the second half of the season, the team lost contact with the top positions, but was fourth in the table, again qualifying for international business. With four goals this season, Wernbloom temporarily revealed his scoring threat from Gothenburg times, and in qualifying for the 2011/12 UEFA Europa League he also made a significant contribution to the group stage with two goals in four games. There the team remained undefeated in six games, but due to five draws, promotion to the sixteenth-finals was only achieved on the last day of the game. Wernbloom's commitment was also crowned with success in the national team: In October 2011, he played as a substitute in the last group game for the European Championship qualification against the Netherlands and was thus involved in the 3-2 success, which meant direct qualification as the best runner-up in the group.

Under contract with CSKA Moscow

Wernbloom in the Champions League against Real Madrid in February 2012

In mid-January 2012, Wernbloom announced his departure from the Dutch honor division. He followed an offer from the Russian first division club CSKA Moscow . At his new club he signed a contract valid until summer 2012 with a term of four and a half years, the club paid an estimated 3 million euros as a transfer fee to AZ Alkmaar. In his competitive debut in the round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League in February of that year, he scored the goal in stoppage time on the basis of Alexei Vladimirovich Beresuzki to equalize 1: 1 against Real Madrid , after a 4-1 defeat in the second leg he was eliminated with the team out of the competition. At the beginning of March he was on the field for the first time in the Premjer League and was a regular player until the end of the season. On the final day of the match he missed a place for qualifying for the 2012/13 UEFA Champions League with the club due to a 3-1 loss to Rubin Kazan , as Spartak Moscow overtook CSKA with a simultaneous win against Lokomotiv Moscow and became runner-up.

At the European Football Championship in France in 2016 , he was included in Sweden's squad, but was not used there. On July 12, he resigned from the national team.
