Maarten Martens (born July 2, 1984 in Eeklo ) is a former Belgian football player .

Career

In the club

Martens was trained in the youth department of RSC Anderlecht . For the 2003/04 season he was part of the professional squad and made his debut. This should be his last game for Anderlecht. The following season he moved to RKC Waalwijk in the Netherlands . There he established himself and was part of the regular squad. After two years he decided to move again and signed with AZ Alkmaar in the summer of 2006. There, too, he quickly rose to become a leader in the red-white game and was able to achieve 3rd place with her in 2007. In the 2007/08 season he tore his cruciate ligament and fell to the AZA for a long time. So he only made eight league appearances this season. In the following year Martens fought his way back into the starting eleven and was one of the guarantors of winning the Dutch championship under coach Louis van Gaal .

During the winter break of the 2013/14 season, it was announced that he would be moving to PAOK Thessaloniki in Greece in the summer of 2014 . The second half of the 2014/15 season he was awarded from there to Cercle Bruges and then ended his active career.

In the national team

With 29 games, Martens is the record player for the Belgian U-21s . He is also the young devil's second best shooter with eight goals . For the Belgian national team Martens completed five games in 2007. He made his debut on March 24, 2007 in the 4-0 defeat against Portugal during qualifying for the 2008 European Championship . In the 2008 Olympic team, Martens was the oldest player in the Red Devil's squad and also their captain at this tournament. His team reached the semi-finals, but had to admit defeat to Nigeria 4-1. In the game for third place, Belgium was defeated by the Brazilians , so that only fourth place remained; Martens played all six of his team's games.
