Gertjan Verbeek (actually Gerrit Jan Alfons Verbeek , born August 1, 1962 in Deventer ) is a Dutch football coach . In Germany he is particularly known for his engagements with 1. FC Nürnberg at VfL Bochum . Most recently he was head coach of Australian A-League - franchises Adelaide United operates.

In the Netherlands he is nicknamed “The Magician of Jubbega” ( Dutch : De tovenaar van Jubbega ). Verbeek also works as an analyst for the Dutch pay broadcaster Fox Sports and the sports program Voetbal Inside .

Career

In his youth Verbeek played in Enschede with VV Zuid Eschmarke and in Hengelo with VV ATC '65 and Achilles '12.

He began his professional career in 1984 at SC Heerenveen , for whom he played as a defender until his retirement in 1994, with an interruption in the 1986/87 season when he played for Heracles Almelo . Most of the time he played in the Eerste Divisie , the second highest division, he was promoted to the Eredivisie twice with Heerenveen : In 1990 he was relegated the following year, in 1993 they managed to stay up and Verbeek ended his active career after 254 league games for the Society.

He then became assistant coach to Foppe de Haan , who remained coach of the first team at SC Heerenveen from 1992 to 2004. In 2001 Verbeek was the first time head coach at his former club Heracles Almelo in the second division. When de Haan resigned in 2004, Verbeek was brought back to continue his work for the next four seasons. In 2008 Feyenoord Rotterdam brought him in as the successor to Bert van Marwijk , but he could not build on the successes such as the cup win of the previous season and was released again. After another season at Almelo, Verbeek moved to AZ Alkmaar in 2010 . With the North Holland he was fourth in the championship twice in a row. In its third year, the club slipped further down the table, but won the Dutch Cup for the fourth time in the club's history and thus the first title win in Verbeek's coaching career. Verbeek made a decision that received much attention worldwide on December 21, 2011 in the cup match at Ajax Amsterdam, in which he took his team off the pitch in the 36th minute in protest and left the stadium with them after goalkeeper Esteban Alvarado Brown received the red card was punished for kicking himself against an assault by an Amsterdam hooligan.

Verbeek is considered a coach who can form successful teams even in clubs with little financial resources. His style is considered authoritarian and idiosyncratic, which is why his contract in Alkmaar was terminated in September 2013 due to internal disputes despite sporting success.

On October 21, 2013, the German Bundesliga club 1. FC Nürnberg Verbeek signed as the successor to Michael Wiesinger, who had previously been dismissed . The contract with the club was valid until June 30, 2015. It was the first foreign engagement of the Dutchman. Despite changing the game system, he initially failed to bring about a turnaround in the club, so that not a single win was achieved in the first half of the season, which is a negative record in the history of the Bundesliga. Verbeek attracted attention because he stopped shaving during the negative series. Only after his first win under his leadership in the opening game of the second half of the season, a 4-0 win against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim , did he lose his beard in the dressing room. On April 23, 2014 Verbeek and his assistant coach Raymond Libregts were given leave of absence from the club three game days before the end of the season .

October 2014 Verbeek said the searching for a coach first division NAC Breda off after initial discussions. As a reason, he stated that he would continue to see his next station abroad. At the turn of the year 2014/2015 he took over the second division of VfL Bochum after the dismissal of Peter Neururer . He received a contract valid until June 30, 2016, which was extended on February 18, 2016 to June 30, 2018. In the second half of 2014/15 he was able to stabilize the club so that it ended the season in eleventh place. VfL Bochum had scored the most goals in the league (53, together with champions FC Ingolstadt 04 ), but also conceded the most goals (55 goals). In the 2015/16 season he led VfL to fifth place in the table. Verbeek was unexpectedly released on July 10, 2017.

At the end of October 2017 he took over FC Twente Enschede . His engagement there ended again in March 2018.

In May 2019 the Dutch signed a contract as head coach of the Australian A-League - franchises Adelaide United . When the regular season was forcibly suspended at the end of March 2020 due to the global COVID-19 pandemic , Adelaide was in seventh place under Verbeek. After he had meanwhile returned to his Dutch homeland, Verbeek asked for an early termination of the contract at the end of April of the same year. The reasons he cited included the uncertain financial situation of the franchise and the need to look after his family in the Netherlands.

Trivia

Verbeek said during his time as coach of 1. FC Nürnberg: “I hope to be 90 years old. Then I can say I could have turned 100. But I worked in Nuremberg. ” The quote was awarded the German Football Culture Prize 2014 as the football saying of the year .
