The Royal Bafokeng Stadium ( English Royal Bafokeng Stadium ), and Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace (English Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace ) is a rugby - football stadium with athletics track in the South African town of Phokeng , near Rustenburg in the North West Province .
history
The stadium is named after the Royal Bafokeng Nation tribe that owns it. It offers 44,530 seats and is one of the most modern stadiums in Africa. Originally planned for the 1995 Rugby Union World Cup , the facility was not completed until 1999. The Rugby World Cup therefore took place in the Olympic Park in Rustenburg, about eleven kilometers away , which is occasionally confused with the Royal Bafokeng Stadium .
The Royal Bafokeng Stadium has hosted several international football matches. Among other things, Burkina Faso played here against South Africa as part of the qualification for the 2002 World Cup . The 2009 Confederations Cup games were also played here. The venue was also one of the venues for the 2010 soccer World Cup . Only comparatively minor modifications were necessary for this. Among other things, a new video wall was installed, the floodlight system was reinforced and the capacity was increased by 3,000 to 42,000 places.
In 2013, the African Cup of Nations in the Royal Bafokeng Stadium was one of five venues in the 2010 World Cup stadium.
