Platinum Stars FC was a South African football club from mahikeng in the province of North West .
history
Platinum Stars is the successor to Highlands Park FC , one of the most successful and well-known clubs in South Africa during apartheid . Highlands Park, who wore red and white jerseys, played in Balfour Park in northern Johannesburg . After the dissolution of the league, which until then was only reserved for the white residents of South Africa, the club went bankrupt. Larry Brookstone, long-time fan of the club, forced a re-establishment as an amateur team in 1998. In the next few years, the team won almost every amateur title in the country and rose to the top division in 2003. The club merged with Silver Stars FC and then played under the name HP Silver Stars inPolokwane ( Limpopo ). In 2006 the club signed a contract with the Royal Bafokeng Nation and moved to Rustenburg . At that time, the team played their home games in the Royal Bafokeng Stadium , which will also be used for the 2010 World Cup . In the same year, the club won the South African Cup competition by beating Ajax Cape Town 3-1 . In May 2007, Royal Bafokeng Holdings bought 51% of the shares in Silver Stars and renamed the club Platinum Stars FC to emphasize the historical importance of platinum mining in the region. The Platinum Stars are currently playing in the Mmabatho Stadium in Mafikeng.
