Rustenburg [ rœstənbœrx ] is a town in the province of North West in South Africa . It is located northwest of the Magaliesberg . The city had 104,612 inhabitants in 2011. The name Rustenburg means place of rest.
history
Rustenburg was founded in 1851 by Voortrekkern . It owes its prosperity to two platinum mines in Merensky Reef , which are among the largest in the world. In addition, an internationally used natural stone is being mined in the vicinity of the city .
Attractions
Worth seeing in Rustenburg are the Anglican Church built in 1871, the Dutch Reformed Church and the City Hall from the 19th century, built in late Victorian historicism . The Rustenburg Museum offers a collection of archaeological finds from the region as well as an overview of the history of the South African Republic .
The Boekenhoutfontein farm area , which once belonged to the South African politician Paul Kruger , is located a few kilometers north of Rustenburg. There are several houses in the Cape Dutch style . A wooden hut from 1841 has also been preserved.
Sports
Rustenburg was one of the ten host cities of the 2010 Soccer World Cup . Five preliminary round matches and one round of 16 were played in the 42,000-seat Royal Bafokeng Stadium .
