The Bidvest Wits Football Club , often abbreviated to Bidvest Wits, is a South African football club from Johannesburg . The club, which is closely linked to Witwatersrand University , was called Wits University Football Club until it was taken over by a sponsor .

history

In 1921 students from Witwatersrand University founded the club. Initially, the team played mainly in invitation tournaments and later took part in lower-class football in South Africa. The club first rose to the top in 1975 when it qualified for the National Football League . There he established himself at the top right away and took a third or fifth place in the table. After the 1977 season, the league broke up and Wits University joined the National Premier Soccer League .

1978 Wits University won the first title in the club's history when the Kaizer Chiefs were defeated 3-2 in the final of the national cup . In the league, the club did not play a major role, only in 1980 he announced himself with a third place in the front division. In 1983 the club reached the cup final again, but the Moroka Swallows won the title. In the final of the League Cup, the club missed its second title chance, the Kaizer Chiefs reciprocated for the final defeat in the Cup five years earlier. In the following year, however, the next triumph in a cup competition, this time the Moroka Swallows were beaten in the final of the BP Top 8 .

The Wits University team qualified in 1985 for the newly formed National Soccer League , in which they established themselves in the middle of the table. After the club was able to surprise with a third place in the table in 1992, he found himself in a relegation battle the following year. After the successful relegation, the team again occupied places in the middle of the table. 1995 followed with wins in the BP Top 8 against the Kaizer Chiefs and in the League Cup against the Orlando Pirates two more titles.

In 2006 the Bidvest Group took over the club, which was then renamed. In 2010 the club celebrated its first title under a new name when AmaZulu Durban was defeated 3-0 in the final of the national cup .
