Bidvest Group is a Johannesburg- based South African holding company engaged in trade and services in South Africa, Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

history

Bidvest is founded as an investment company in 1988, in the same year the first investments are made in Chipkins ( catering ) and shortly afterwards Seaworld ( frozen food ), which are grouped under Bidfood. In 1991 a new business area was added with the acquisition of Steiner Services (hygiene). In 1993, with the takeover of Safcor Freight, the freight division (bid freight) was established. The first investment abroad is made in 1995 - Bidvest takes over 50.1% of the Australian company Manettas. 1997 Bidvest is included in the JSE Industrial Index. The Australian subsidiary Bidvest plc was floated on the Australian stock exchange in 1998. In 1999 the move to Europe was made with the takeover of the British company Booker Foodservice (now 3663 First for Foodservice). In 2006, Bidvest participates in Mumbai Airport through the GVK Group consortium . In 2012, the first investment in South America was made with the purchase of Deli Meals in Chile .

Bidvest holds (as of July 2008) its investments through eight companies:

  • Bidfreight comprises several independent logistics companies all operating in Africa. This includes port services and the operation of warehouses.
  • Bidserv includes a large number of different companies in the service sector, including cleaning, airport services, travel agencies and the Bidvest Bank
  • Bidvest Europe includes food service companies in the UK , the Netherlands , Belgium and the UAE
  • Bidvest Asia Pacific is the holding company for Bidvest Australia, Bidvest New Zealand, Angliss Singapore and Angliss Hong Kong and China - these companies are also active in the food service sector
  • Bidfood includes several South African companies involved in the production and distribution of food, including Chipkins - Bidvest's first investment.
  • Bid Industrial and Commercial Products includes companies that manufacture and / or sell a variety of industrial products, including industrial sewing machines (Eastman Staples), office furniture (CN Business Furniture) and electrical appliances (Voltex Electrical)
  • Bidpaper Plus consists essentially of the company Lithotech, which is active in the printing sector
  • Bid Auto is the parent company of McCarthy Motor Holdings - according to their own information, South Africa's largest car dealer with 130 branches.

With a turnover of 16 billion Rand (almost 30% of total turnover) in the first half of 2008, Bidvest Europe is the largest group company, followed by Bidfreight with 11 billion Rand and Bid Auto with 10 billion Rand.

Overall, 2007 sales of 95.9 billion rand (about 9.6 billion euros) and a profit before tax of 3.8 billion rand. The turnover grew significantly compared to 2006, where 77.4 billion rand were achieved.

Bidvest sees itself as a financial holding, which means that there is no intervention in the operational business of the holdings. Further acquisitions are to be made in the food service area in particular.

The Bidvest Group share is listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. More than half of the shares are in the hands of institutional investors (insurance companies and pension funds), the largest shareholder is the state-owned Public Investment Corporation.

Others

Bidvest is the name-giving sponsor of the Johannesburg premier league football club Bidvest Wits (originally Wits University FC), which plays its home games at the Bidvest Stadium (formerly Milpark Stadium).
