Maritzburg United is a South African football club from Pietermaritzburg . The club currently plays in the highest South African league, the Premier Soccer League .

history

The club was founded in 1979 under the name Maritzburg United Football Club . The development of the club is closely linked to the name of the Kadodia brothers. After the first division game rights (franchise license) were bought from the financially troubled Tembisa Classic club in 2005 , professional football was made possible in Pietermaritzburg. After relegation, the club has been back in the Premier Soccer League since the 2008/09 season.

Since 2009, Maritzburg United has been coached by the German soccer coach Ernst Middendorp with an interruption of ten months . On March 12, 2011, he was released from his contract early, but reinstated in January 2012.

For the 2012/13 season the club signed Delron Buckley, a long-time professional in the 1st and 2nd Bundesliga . In addition to Buckley from Karlsruher SC , Orlando Smeekes also moved from SV Wehen Wiesbaden to the South African first division club.
