The (New) Peter Mokaba Stadium ( English (New) Peter Mokaba Stadium ) is a rugby and football stadium in the South African city of Polokwane , in which four group matches of the 2010 World Cup were played. The facility is named after the ANC politician Peter Mokaba who died on June 11, 2002 in Johannesburg . Today it offers 41,733 places. Not far from the new stadium is the old stadium of the same name.
history
It was built for the 2010 World Cup and is located next to the old Pietersburg Stadium from 1976. The sports facility offered 45,000 seats for the World Cup and has a roof over the main stand. On January 23, 2010 the friendship tournament Peter Mokaba Cup took place in the stadium as the first event . In the first semi-final, Supersport United from Pretoria and the Danish team from Brøndby IF (2-1) met. The second semifinals were played by the Kaizer Chiefs from Johannesburg and Wits University FC (4: 3 i. E. ). The Kaizer Chiefs decided the final 4-2 against Supersport United. The first international match was the soccer match between South Africa and Guatemala (5-0) on May 31, 2010. The stadium has parking spaces for 2,396 cars and 100 buses.
