The General Seyni Kountché Stadium ( French : Stade Général Seyni Kountché ) is a football stadium with an athletics facility in the Nigerien capital Niamey .
Location and infrastructure
The General Seyni Kountché Stadium is located on the Boulevard du Zarmaganda in the east of the Niamey I arrondissement . It is the home stadium of the Nigerien national soccer team and the soccer clubs Sahel SC , Olympic FC de Niamey , Zumunta AC and JS du Ténéré . The 35,000-seat stadium is part of a larger area that is used for various sports.
history
The General Seyni Kountché Stadium was built on the site of the Stade du 29 Juillet, which was demolished in 1987, and opened in 1989. It is named after General Seyni Kountché , the President of the Republic of Niger who died in 1987. In 1999 it was renovated and expanded. In 2005 the 5th Francophonie games and in 2009 the 1st CENSAD games took place in the stadium.
