Niamey I is in the northeast of the city on the left bank of the Niger River . To the west of Niamey I is the Arrondissement Commune II , south side of the river, the district Niamey V . Niamey I is Niamey's most important retail district. Here you will find three of the city's seven most important markets.

Niamey I consists of an urban area, which is divided into 23 districts (quartiers) and a rural area with nine villages (villages) .

history

The city of Niamey was divided into five districts in 1984. In 1989 the 1st and 2nd districts were merged to form a municipality ( French : commune urbaine ) within Niamey. This municipality also had the name Niamey I and until 1996 comprised the area of ​​today's Arrondissements Niamey I and Niamey II as well as part of today's Arrondissement Niamey III. Niamey I has existed in its current area since 1996. In 2010, the municipalities of Niameys were converted into arrondissements.
