Château 1 (also: Château I ) is a district ( French : quartier ) in the Arrondissement Niamey I of the city of Niamey in Niger .

geography

Château 1 is located in the Plateau district in the center of Niamey. The district is located in a plateau with a sand layer more than 2.5 meters deep, which allows better infiltration than in other parts of the city. The surrounding neighborhoods include Plateau 2 in the north, Issa Béri in the northeast and Corniche Yantala in the south.

history

The district takes its name from Niamey 's first water tower of the same name (the French word château d'eau means water tower), which began operations here in 1940. The European quarter of Niamey was in Plateau at that time. After Niger's independence from France in 1960 until the 1970s, there were still many western residents in the city, for whom western shops, such as bread, jeans and T-shirts, existed in Château 1. The first art dealers came in the early 1980s. Many artisans, including Wodaabe in the beginning , who had come to Niamey since the 1984 drought, owned shops in Château 1 and lived in the nearby settlement of Cases Allemandes . From 1987 Tuareg smiths from the Agadez region settled in the district. Their influx increased when tourism in the Agadez region collapsed due to the Tuareg rebellion in the 1990s . In the late 1990s, Tuareg blacksmiths from the Tahoua region and Hausa antiques dealers were added.

population

At the 2012 census, the neighborhood had 135 inhabitants living in 22 households.

Infrastructure

There is a high concentration of craft shops by the water tower and along the avenue du Château d'Eau. More than 300 artisans work in Château 1, most of them Tuareg blacksmiths. There are also around 20 art dealers.
