Yantala Bas ("Lower Yantala") is located in the west of the city center of Niamey. The surrounding districts are Yantala Haut ("Upper Yantala") in the north, Plateau 2 in the northeast, Château 1 in the east, Corniche Yantala in the southeast, Ambassades in the southwest and Koira Kano in the west. The district extends over an area of about 59 hectares and is located in a plateau with a layer of sand more than 2.5 meters deep, which allows better infiltration than in other parts of the city. Yantala Bas is considered one of the most dangerous areas of Niamey in terms of robbery and theft.

The standard scheme for street names in the district is rue YA 1 , with the French rue for street followed by the abbreviation YA for Yantala Ancien ("Old Yantala") and finally a number. This goes back to a project to name streets in Niamey in 2002, in which the city was divided into 44 zones, each with its own letter abbreviations.

history

Yantala Bas corresponds to the historical settlement of Yantala. The village already existed before the city of Niamey was founded at the beginning of the 20th century. The rank of being at the beginning of the settlement history of the urban area is disputed between groups from Yantala, Goudel , Kalley , Maourey and Saga . When Plateau , the new European quarter of Niamey, was founded in 1937, the Zarma- inhabited village of Yantala was on the outskirts.

Much land in Yantala, like in Goudel and other parts of the fast-growing city, was irregularly taken over by real estate speculators in the 1950s. Former soldiers and state officials were among the first buyers. Yantala continued to grow uncontrollably in the 1960s and made previous urban planning obsolete. In the 1970s, the Yantala Haut district emerged as an extension. With the division of Niamey into five districts in 1979, Yantala Bas became part of the 1st district, which in 1989 with the 2nd district in the sub-municipality Niamey I, which in turn was dissolved in 1996 in the previous form.
