Plateau is located on a plateau in the center of Niamey, in parts of the arrondissements Niamey I and Niamey II . The district includes the districts of Château 1 , Issa Béri and Plateau 2 . It extends over an area of about 524 hectares . The standard scheme for street names in the south of Plateau is rue PL 1 , where the French rue for street is followed by PL for plateau and finally a number. This goes back to a project to name streets in Niamey in 2002, in which the city was divided into 44 zones, each with its own letter abbreviations. In the Plateau 2 district, on the other hand, as in Yantala Haut, the rue YN 1 scheme is used, where the abbreviation YN stands for Yantala Nouveau (Yantala Haut).

history

In 1937, during the French colonial era , the Europeans' quarter was built in Plateau, replacing that in Niamey-Bas . The dry valley Gounti Yéna formed the park-like border to the settlement of the local population.

After Niger gained independence in 1960, Plateau retained the function of the administrative center of the entire state. In the 1980s, Plateau was administratively one of the then 79 districts (quartiers) of Niamey and was divided into 13 sectors. The resident population now consisted of senior executives from Niger and a few skilled workers sent to the city from abroad. With Cases Allemandes and Tchana-Carré, two small poor settlements emerged between the residential areas of Plateau .
