Yantala Haut ("Upper Yantala") is located in the west of the urban parish of Niamey. The surrounding districts are SONUCI in the northwest, Riyad in the north, Plateau 2 in the southeast, Yantala Bas ("Lower Yantala") in the south and Koira Kano in the southwest. The district is located in a plateau with a sand layer more than 2.5 meters deep, which allows better infiltration than in other parts of the city. To the west of Yantala Haut is the Yantala Muslim Cemetery , which extends over an area of 55.2 hectares .

The standard scheme for street names in Yantala Haut is rue YN 1 , where the French rue for street is followed by the abbreviation YN for Yantala Nouveau and finally a number. This goes back to a project to name streets in Niamey in 2002, in which the city was divided into 44 zones, each with its own letter abbreviations. These zones do not necessarily coincide with the administrative boundaries of the eponymous districts. The rue YN 1 scheme is used not only in Yantala Haut, but also in the neighboring Plateau 2 district.

history

Yantala Haut emerged in the 1970s as an extension of the older settlement of Yantala Bas. From 1978 onwards, mud-brick apartments of medium and high standards were built here for higher officials.

population

At the 2012 census, Yantala Haut had 33,691 residents who lived in 5747 households. At the 2001 census, the population was 45,823 in 7368 households, and at the 1988 census, the population was 24,620 in 4,546 households.

Infrastructure

There are two major markets in Yantala Haut: the 1.1 hectare Yantala Habou Tagui , located in the middle of the residential area, and the Yantala Kini Habou night market on National Road 1, which specializes in second-hand clothing. The former has been in existence since 1990 and was redesigned in 1995. the second was created in 1995. There are synergy effects between the two markets. The traders of the Yantala Kini Habou store their goods in the Yantala Habou Tagui during the day . In a fire in the Yantala Habou Tagui on the night of April 1 to April 2, 2012, over 100 market stalls were destroyed.

The public primary school Ecole primaire de Yantala Haut was founded in 1987. There is a health center in the district with a Center de Santé Intégré (CSI).
