The SOS Children's Village Niamey ( French : SOS Village d'Enfants de Niamey ) is an institution of the SOS Children's Villages organization in the Niamey I arrondissement of the city of Niamey in Niger .

Location and infrastructure

The SOS Children's Village Niamey is located in the urban municipality of Niamey north of the city center. Administratively, it forms a separate city ​​district (French: quartier ). The surrounding districts are Cité Chinoise in the north, Lazaret in the east, Dar Es Salam in the south and Bobiel in the west. Like the rest of the north of Niamey, the children's village is located on a plateau with a layer of sand less than 2.5 meters deep.

The complex comprises twelve family houses for 120 children. These are named after different regions of Niger: Zarmaganda , Tamesna , Aïr , Kawar , Manga , Damergou , Arewa , Ader , Anzourou , Damagaram , Dendi and Azawak . There are also additional houses for employees, an administration block with a medical station, a small sports hall and a soccer field. There is also a primary school - the école primaire SOS Hermann Gmeiner - for around 420 children in 12 classes and a kindergarten for up to 125 children. Primary school and kindergarten can also be attended by children from the neighborhood.

The basis was created with the signing of a partnership agreement between the organization SOS Children's Villages International and the Republic of Niger on April 20, 1989. The foundation stone was laid on July 26, 1991. The SOS Children's Village Niamey was opened on April 1, 1993. In 1996, the primary school was renovated and expanded. The soccer field was redesigned in 1997 with financial support from FIFA .
