Alex Brima

Alex Tamba Brima (born November 23, 1971 in Yaryah , † June 9, 2016 in Kigali , Rwanda ), known as Gullit , was a Sierra Leonean military man in the Sierra Leone Army . He was a leading member of the 17 soldiers rebel organization Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC; 1997-1998) in the civil war in Sierra Leone , which overthrew the elected government of Ahmad Tejan Kabbah in May 1997 under the leadership of Johnny Paul Koroma .

Life

Brima was a Kono . In April 1985 he joined the Sierra Leone strike forces and rose to Staff Sergeant . In 1998 he was appointed to the AFRC's Board of Governors at the request of Johnny Paul Koroma. He was henceforth commander of the AFRC and the Revolutionary United Front (RUF), which was known for its war crimes and human rights violations .

Brima was arrested on March 10, 2003 and charged in the Special Court for Sierra Leone . The trial started on March 7, 2005, along with the charges against Brima Kamara and Santigie Kanu . Brima was found guilty on June 20, 2007 of crimes against humanity and war crimes including murder, rape, forced labor and the use of child soldiers . He received a 50 -year prison sentence , which he served in Mpanga Prison in Rwanda until his death in 2016 .

Brima died on June 9, 2016 at the age of 44 in a hospital in the Rwandan capital Kigali.
