The International Prison Mpanga ( English Mpanga International Prison ) is a prison in Nyanza district or Ruhango district in Rwanda . Founded in 2006, it is considered one of the most modern in Africa. The construction costs were the equivalent of around 2.4 million euros .

As an international prison, it is primarily used to accommodate African war criminals . Around 8,000 prisoners, including Rwandan and Sierra Leonean war criminals, are held in Mpanga. They were transferred by the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the Special Tribunal for Sierra Leone .

Sierra Leoner

Since Sierra Leone did not have the necessary infrastructure for the convicts in 2007, they were brought to Rwanda in 2009. The five remaining imprisoned Sierra Leonean war criminals are (as of November 2019):
