Augustine Gbao

Augustine Gbao (born August 13, 1948 in Blama ) is a former paramilitary commander of the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) in Sierra Leone . He is one of only three RUF leaders in the Sierra Leone civil war held responsible for his war crimes .

Gbao was a member of the Sierra Leonean Police from 1981 to 1986. In 1991 he turned to the RUF in Liberia . Until 2002 he held high-ranking positions in the RUF and the Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC).

On April 16, 2003, Gbao was arrested and from July 5, 2004, he had to appear before the Special Court for Sierra Leone , together with Morris Kallon and Issa Sesay . On February 25, 2009, Gbao was convicted of war crimes and crimes against humanity on 14 of the 18 counts . He was sentenced to 25 years in prison in Mpanga Prison in Rwanda .
