Issa Sesay

Issa Hassan Sesay (born June 27, 1970 in Freetown ) is a former paramilitary commander of the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) in Sierra Leone . He is one of only three RUF leaders in the Sierra Leone civil war held responsible for his war crimes .

Sesay is best known for the disarmament of the RUF, which led to the de facto end of the civil war. Nevertheless, Sesay received the highest sentence of all those involved in the war with the judgment of the Special Court for Sierra Leone on February 25, 2009, at 52 years. His accomplices Morris Kallon and Augustine Gbao got 40 and 25 years respectively.

Sesay held high positions in the RUF from 1993 to 1999 and took over the leadership of the rebels on an interim basis in May 2000. He was also a senior member of the Armed Forces Revolutionary Council . Sesay was found guilty of 16 of the 18 war crimes and crimes against humanity charges by the court that arrested him on March 7, 2003 . He is serving his 52-year sentence in Mpanga Prison in Rwanda .

In 2010, Sesay was summoned twice to the International Court of Justice for defense in the trial of former Liberian President Charles Taylor .

At the end of 2018, he asked to be allowed to serve the rest of his sentence in Sierra Leone.

Cinematic reception

The documentary War Don Don by Rebecca Richman Cohen , which deals with the life of Sesay was for two 2011 Emmy Awards nominated and won several international awards.
