geography

Poudrière is located to the east of the urban municipality and borders the Niamey green belt in the southeast . The neighboring districts are Abidjan in the northwest, Route Filingué in the northeast, Cité Fayçal in the southwest and Collège Mariama and Kalley Sud in the west. The district covers an area of approximately 185.7 hectares and is located in a plateau with a sand layer in the north and south more less 2.5 meters deep. On the southern edge of Poudrière, north of the Boulevard de l'Indépendance, is the 105 logements residential area .

The standard scheme for street names in the northeast of Poudrière is rue PO 1 , where the French rue for street is followed by PO for Poudrière and finally a number. This goes back to a project to name streets in Niamey in 2002, in which the city was divided into 44 zones, each with its own letter abbreviations. These zones do not necessarily coincide with the administrative boundaries of the eponymous districts. In other parts of Poudrière, for example, the schemes Rue CI 1 , named after Cité Fayçal, and Rue RF 1 , named after Route Filingué, are used.

history

The Poudrière district (French for "powder magazine") was created in the early 1970s. Middle and high standard apartments were built here for higher officials. From 1978 to 1988 Poudrière was one of the fastest growing districts of Niamey. With the division of Niamey into five districts in 1979, Poudrière became part of the 3rd district, which in 1989 merged with the 4th district in the sub-municipality Niamey II, which in turn was dissolved in its previous form in 1996.
