Kalley Est ("Kalley East") is located in downtown Niamey and is part of the Kalley district . The district is bordered by the streets of Avenue du Ghana, Avenue Soni Ali Ber, Avenue du Niger, Boulevard de la Liberté and Rue du Tchad. The surrounding neighborhoods are Abidjan in the north, Kalley Sud in the southeast, Kalley Center in the southwest and Lacouroussou in the west. Kalley Est lies in a plateau with a layer of sand that is more than 2.5 meters deep in the north and less than 2.5 meters in the south.

The standard scheme for street names in Kalley Est and other districts is Rue GM 1 , with the French rue for street being followed by GM for Grand Marché , a large market further west, and finally a number. This goes back to a project to name streets in Niamey in 2002, in which the city was divided into 44 zones, each with its own letter abbreviations.

history

The district emerged in the 1950s. In the mid-1990s, the Karam-Karam market was founded in the district . It was considered an important market for furniture, real estate and household electrical appliances. In a fire that broke out on the evening of February 16, 2020, almost all of the more than 280 market stalls were destroyed.

population

At the 2012 census, Kalley Est had 9,142 residents who lived in 1,796 households. At the 2001 census, the population was 11,296 in 1,745 households, and at the 1988 census, the population was 12,169 in 2,136 households.
